82 Plasma spray deposition and characterization of the YSZ LaPO4 abradable thermal barrier coating using in the gas turbines Mohsen Hajian Foroushani Mohsen hajian@ma iut ac ir Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors M Shamanian Professor shamanian@cc iut ac irM Salehi Professor surfacesalehi@hotmail comAbstractIn this research LaPO4 was added to the YSZ to improve the abradability behavior of theYSZ First LaPO4 was synthesized by reaction of La2O3 and orthophosphoric acid In orderto reduce the particle size of the LaPO4 to the suitable range of plasma spraying thesynthesized powder was milled for 15 minute Then LaPO4 was added to YSZ powder in1 9 and 1 4 proportion and were mixed with each other to produce homogeneous powder The RSM and full factorial method was used to optimization of the plasma sprayingparameters The DOE results shown that the electric current is the most important factor inplasma spraying of the composite powders The NiCrAlY powder and Inconel 718 were usedas bond coat and substrate respectively The coatings were evaluated with differentexaminations such as hardness roughness porosity wear and high temperature oxidationtests The X ray analysis shown that the LaPO4 was stable during plasma spraying processand the amount of monoclinic phase of YSZ was reduced after the spraying The SEMimages shown that the thickness of the TGO was approximately equal in the all of thecoatings The results shown the TGO growth rate was decreased with the time The sinteringresistance of composite coatings significantly increased in comparison with the monolithicYSZ coating The wear test results shown that the abradability behavior improved in thecomposite coatings and the weight loss of the alumina ball counterpart significantly reducedin the composite coatings Keywords Abradable coatings Thermal barrier coatings YSZ LaPO4 Air Plasma Spray
