102 Comparison Of Methods Of Obtaining Groundwater From Anomalistic Aquifer Of Khoor And Biabanak Playa Using GMS Model Ahmad Reza Hajizadeh a hajizadeh@ag iut ac ir July 13 2015 Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor S Eslamian saeid@cc iut ac ir Abstract Based on the studies the Dashte Kavir of Iran contains valuable reserves of soluble potash in groundwater aquifers within the playas The surface of all playas in Dashte Kavir is covered with a thick layer of salt crust The brine which is saturated with sodium chloride has filled the space b etween crystals of salt crust Brine due to the high percentage of potassium ion has been considered for exploitation and extraction of potash The data of 47 observation wells and 28 exploratory wells were used for modeling of the study area the 31 kilometers drainage canals convey the central region draining water out of the aquifer To evaluate the GMS model in this study area all effective parameters of the aquifer were considered as input data to the model First model has been run in steady state condition and then the calibration process of the model was performed and subsequently for unsteady state 12 stress periods The statistical analysis of the obtained results in unsteady state condition pertaining to piezometers the errors RMSE MAE MBE had a maximum of 0 05 0 5 0 4 meters respectively Finally in verification stage performed based on 90 data R2 obtained 0 9216 and the slope of regression line is 1 18 Using GMS model the Khoor Biabanak playa is simulated in this study so that it is a true representative of the groundwater natural conditions in mentioned area Then considering 2 scenarios current and future condition of groundwater have been predicted According to the results of the model in each scenario the groundwater brine e xtraction methods compared with each other and finally appropriate methods were suggested At first scenario current condition of groundwater has been predicted and specified that the water table is almost near the ground surface Since the water table is high and the groundwater direction is into the center of playa pumping stations using canal has been determined as the main method of groundwater brine extraction Since the groundwater is extensive and considerable in northern and south eastern areas ponds construction started at the end of canal lines in these areas There are also some prepared points in the eastern of central playa caused drilling operating wells was suggested as an extraction method Then the model ran as suming the continuation of operation of suggested methods to 15 years later The results showed that in the areas with drainage canal and ponds the water table has been decreased specially in the canals and ponds locations The water table stands lower th an depth of drainage canals in the majority of playa This will avoid the groundwater brine extraction from salt crust Finally to extract groundwater brine again from playa aquifer either hot water must be injected to enhance the groundwater or some wells must be drilled with various depths Keywords GMS model playa simulation groundwater aquifer drainage canal
