Synthesis and Performance Evaluation of Tubular Alumina CeramicMembrane with Nano Size Surface Pores for Separation of Hexane from Vegetable Oil Mohammad Javad Nouri 1 Mj nouri@ce iut ac ir 2 mj nouri@yahoo com March 8 2015 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Ahmad Moheb Professor ahmad@cc iut ac irAbstractDuring past two decades membrane developed from lab scale tools to extended industrial product that hasverity of applications like desalination of seawater industrial waste water treatment and also food industries Membrane separation processes have advantages over conventional separation processes including energysavings the selectivity of the compounds obtained the possibility of separation of thermolabile compounds the simplicity of operating the system and a relatively easy scale up from lab to industrial scale In contrast tothe conventional refining process the membrane process can be conducted at low temperatures preservingthe heat sensitive components of technological interest of the oil such as natural antioxidants A more stableproduct with thus better quality can be obtained using membranes Inherently Ceramic membranes havemore stability than polymeric membranes thus widespread investigations carried on manufacturing anddevelopment of Ceramic membranes nowadays The capabilities of ceramic membranes include high temperature durability sufficient mechanical strength chemical inertness organic solvent resistance andunique surface characteristics Furthermore these membranes are resistant to biological attack and steamsterilization so that there is less likelihood of bacteria contamination Such a feature is highly attractive forthe food and pharmaceutical industries In this study manufacturing of a tubular alumina ceramic membraneby modified gel casting method followed by dip coating method to decrease the surface pore size and usinggelatin as a gelling agent was investigated In this work optimum amount of dolapix dispersant for 50 Wtof alumina slurry was indicated as 00 65 grams dolapix per 100grams of alumina The optimum amount ofgelling agent gelatin and it s dissolving temperature was investigated and 8 W gelatin based on the totalused water which dissolved in 60centigrade was achieved This amount and temperature made a prosity about64 in substrate For the next level of experiment increasing the physical stability of membrane wasinvestigated and the optimum amount of nano particle SiO 2 to be added to the slurry was measured 3 Wbased on the total alumina powder used in slurry This amount increased the final physical stability of themembrane seven times more than before The liquid desicant method was used for initial drying of themembrane and the effective parameters on drying speed and the amount of removal water wereinvestigated one of these effective parameters was the concentration of poly ethylene glaycol in desicantsolution and the optimum concentration achieved was 15 W Dip coating method was used for surfacemodification of made membrane thus an accurate machine was made to do this process as well The slurryused for coating process was made from three different alumina particle size and the membranes were coatedup to three times to achieve the desired pore size The final membranes were used to separate hexane fromvegetable oil and an oil rejection up to 44 and a permeation flux up to 11kg m 2h was achieved Keywords Ceramic membrane Gel casting Dip coating hexane separation from oil
