63 Date of Submission June 22 2015 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr S M Abtahi mabtahi@cc iut ac ir Dr M Vafaeian mahmood@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr M Khodaparast khodaparast@qom ac ir AbstractIn The road construction evaluation and quality control of layers of road has been a continuing challengefor engineers Soil compaction is an important characteristic for Quality control of layer s of pavement Suitable compaction of each layer increases the soil bearing capacity and reduces seepage and surfacesettlement The best way to control soil compaction is non destructive testing usually done at the projectsite The least destroying of the place is the importance of this method In this study the dynamic coneprobe method is discussed beacause of high speed response the least destruction and cost and simplicityof testing in comparison with other methods Tests have been done on the layers of base and subbase for 5different types of soil aggregation and their results were compared with relative compaction obtainedfrom sand bottle test The results showed that there is rational relationship between the number of blow ofdynamic cone probe for 10cm penetration M10 and corrected probe results penetration index DPI andcone tip resistance qd on the one hand and Characteristic of relative compaction of the soil on the otherhand Due to the soil aggregation influence on the results and obtained relationships this influence isconsidered in the relationships by use of the the dynamic cone tip resistance to the average grain sizeratio So the resultant relationships is independent of the type of probe and the type of soil and it saggregation The power equation with a correlation coefficient equal to 0 89 showed the best relationshipsbetween dynamic cone probe test results and the soil relative compaction Key words Quality control soil relative compaction dynamic cone probe penetration index cone tipresistance
