One Particle Generalized Szilard Engine Assisted by a antum Maxwell s Demon Zahra Moghadasi Rise z moghadasi@ph iut ac ir 17 1 2016 Department of Physics Isfahan University of Te nology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor prof Behruz Mirza b mirza@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this thesis at rst we study solution of paradox of the Maxwell s demon MD en we explainthe Holevo bound on the accessible information en we study the physical me anism of Maxwell sdemon and use it to do extra work from a heat engin in thermodynamic cycles is engin is called Szilard heat engin SZHE one amber with one particle in a thermodynamic cycle is cycle con sists of four steps insertion measurement controlled expansion removing the wall so that the nextthermodynamic cycle can be restarted In this thesis we generalize this engin in step 2 and insert twowalls insted of one wall in amber Here the Maxwell s demon is modeled as a several level system with quantum coherence or on a lowertemperature than that of the heat bath of the particle Number of levels depends on the states of engin e Maxwell s demon is for measuring and controlling the motion of the molecule e quantum SZHE s e ciency is evaluated in detail to prove the validity of second law of thermody namics It is illustrated that generalization of Szilard heat engin improve it s e ciency Moreover in comparison with the classical version of SZHE the following quantum phenomena wereobserved in the quantum thermodynamic cycles 1 e nite size e ect of the potential well 2 equantum coherence is allowed to exist in the MD s density matrix 3 In the measurement process the nite temperature of MD actually results in the error in controlling the single molecule s motion Keywords Maxwell s Demon Szilard Heat Engin Landauer s erasure principle
