74 Production and properties of nanofibers made of poly methyl methacrylate poly thiophene modified with sulfur Mahboobe Iranzad m iranzad@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission 2016 02 10 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Persian Supervisor Sedigheh Borhani sborhani@cc iut ac ir Advisor Mohammad Dinari dinari@cc iut ac irAbstractAccording to the studies related to conductive polymers polythiophen PTh and its derivativeshave desirable properties such as electrical conductivity high thermal stability and optical propertiessuch as electrochromism photothermal and photocatalytic properties that have been used in electricaland electronic equipments In this study PTh was used to produce nanofibers Modification of theconductive polymers such as PTh can increased dramatically the performance of the polymer Therefore in this study first PTh was modified with inorganic sulfur particles through oxidation reduction processes during polymerization Afterwards nanofibers of poly methyl methacrylate PMMA were prepared by electrospinning of homogeneous solution of PTh or sulfur modifiedpolythiophen S PTh and PMMA FTIR and HNCS test results indicate that the formation of thePTh and S PTh Results showed an increase in thermal stability of the S PTh compare to PTh Itwas also observed that PTh and S PTh have good the photocatalytic properties to degradation of methylene blue MB under visible light irradiation Based on the test results S PTh in the presence ofan electrolyte has electrochemical oxidation reduction capability and can be used in electronicdevices SEM images showed that the PMMA nanofibers diameter was decreased with increasing in PTh or S PTh content due to decrease in polymer solution viscosity and increase in solution conductivity FTIR spectra ofnanofibers obviously showed the characteristic absorption peaks related to PMMA and PTh or S PTh polymericgroups This showed that there is no chemical linkage or interaction between PMMA and PTh or S PTh in theresulting nanofibers XRD results revealed amorphous structure of nanofibers TGA results of nanofibersshowed that thermal stability of the PMMA increased due to increasing of PTh or S PTh in PMMA electrospunnanofibers Also lower thermal degradation rate of PMMA S PTh nanofibers was observed in compareto PMMA PTh nanofibers The photocatalytic properties of nano bers were evaluated by photocatalyticdegradation of MB in water under visible light irradiation It was observed that PMMA PMMA PTh andPMMA S PTh nano bers exhibited the most excellent photocatalytic activity Since the amount of PTh or S PTh in the nanofibers is negligible with respect to PMMA polymer no significant difference in MB degradationwas observed Key words polythiophen modified polythiophen sulfur poly methyl methacrylate nanofiber photocatalysis
