31Effect of Feeding Pomegranate Seed Peel on Blood Metabolites of Cloned Male Goats and Their Sperm Quality and In Vitro Sperm Fertility Hamid Zareporfard H Zare93@yahoo com May 17 2016 Department of Animal Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor A Riasi ariasi@cc iut ac irAbstractThe aim of this study was to in vitro evaluation the effect of pomegranate seed peel PSP on blood metabolites sperm quality and sperm fertility in male goats Nine cloned malegoats 2 3 years old were randomly allocated to three experimental groups 1 0 PSP control 2 30 PSP PSP30 and 3 60 PSP PSP60 The barley grain was replaced withPSP 0 30 and 60 in the experimental diets However all diets were adjusted to be iso caloric and iso nitrogenous using SRNS software Semen samples were collected byartificial vagina twice a week Semen quality including sperm motility sperm membraneintegrity sperm viability ROS production level and fertilization possibility rates wereevaluated Results showed that feeding 30 and 60 of PSP could improve P 0 05 someparameters such as sperm motility sperm viability and the integrity of plasma membranecompared to the control group The ROS production levels decreased P 0 05 in thePSP30 and PSP60 groups compared to the control group The in vitro sperm fertilizationhad no positive effect in all experimental groups and there was no result for fertilization embryo development blastocysts formation and embryo hatching The results of bloodmetabolites showed that PSP30 group had lower P 0 05 blood urea nitrogen 16 81mg dl than those the control 19 66 mg dl and PSP60 20 27 mg dl groups The groupPSP30 had higher P 0 05 serum albumin compared to the other groups The PSP30 andPSP60 groups 63 28 60 85 mg dl had higher serum concentration of cholesterol thanthat the control 46 11 mg dl However the concentrations of serum testosterone was notaffected by the treatment P 0 05 Moreover serum malondialdehyde concentration wasnot affected by the treatment The results suggest that feeding pomegranate seed peel as asource of unsaturated fatty acids and with antioxidant activity could improve some spermcharacteristics and blood parameters in goat Key words Pomegranate seed peel Antioxidant Sperm Blood metabolites Cloned malegoats
