Beamforming in Energy Harvesting Systems under Per Transmit Antenna Power Constraint Zahra Rezaei zahra rezaei@ec iut ac ir May 28 2016 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisors Dr Ehsan Yazdian yazdian@cc iut ac ir Dr Foroogh Sadat Tabataba fstabataba@cc iut ac ir Abstract RF Energy harvesting in wireless communication is an attractive solution to prolong the lifetime of power limited net works in 5G In Wireless powered communication networks WPCNs the wireless devices use the harvested RF energyfrom input signal instead of conventional batteries WPCN eliminates the need of manual battery replacement recharging which allows us to communicate without interruption due to energy depletion Thus WPCNs effectively reduce the opera tional cost and enhance communication performance compared to conventional battery powered communication For thisreason RF enabled wireless power transfer WPT has attracted a lot of attention in wireless researches due to its controlla bility and reliability A key concern for WPT is the decay in electromagnetic wave with the increase of transmission distanceand low received energy in receivers Employing multi antenna systems and beamforming techniques is an efficient methodfor increasing the gain without increasing transmit power and bandwidth due to its significant performance gain We consider a broadcast network where one multi antenna transmitter with per antenna power constraint transferswireless energy for users which are randomly placed within the cell area First we cosider sum energy maximization problemwithout fairness and provide closed form solutions for two special cases Also for general case we propose two sub optimalsolutions which are very close to CVX numerical results To consider the fairness among users we further propose max min fair problem and analyze it for a special case along with its advantages compared to recent works in the literature viasimulations Then we cosider both sum energy maximization and max min problem with distributed transmit antennas andderive heuristic solution for sum energy maximization problem Finally by comparing the distributed versus co locatedtransmit antennas we show that although the sum received energy is reduced however the minimum energy received byusers is improved which results in better fairness Key Words Energy Harvesting Wireless Power Transfer Energy Beamforming Distributed EnergyBeamforming Fairness
