104 The effect of bleach on benthic community of Zayandehroud bed Mojdeh Nahayat Mogdehnahayat@yahoo com September 19 2016 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree MSc Language PersianDr Eisa Ebrahimi Dorche e ebrahimi@cc iut ac irAbstractToday municipal wastewater treatment and disposal environmentally appropriate to the host resourcesis one of the most essential services Despite many efforts to do the treatment again poses threats tohuman and aquatic due to the use of improper methods of treatment and the remnants of refinedpollutants into rivers This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the bleach on water qualityand benthic community of the Zayandehroud River in three parts including 1 The effects of the bleachon the quality of wastewater and river water at the downstream of the IS WWTP 2 Spatial andtemporal changes of biological indices richness and diversity indices of benthic macroinvertebrates ofthe river bed 3 Analyze the effects of the other factors such as discharge and water quality in longterm periods 20 years on the benthic community The results of this study showed the bleach has highefficiency in reducing some parameters such as fecal coliforms 99 99 and biochemical oxygendemand 72 6 but little efficiency in reducing the total suspended solids 17 4 and total dissolvedsolids 27 In contrast measureing the quality parameters in wastewater samples before and afteraddition of the bleach showed increasing trend in many parameters such as the electrical conductivity 3 7 chemical oxygen demand 52 6 free chlorine and total chlorine 87 2 of wastewatersamples after adding the bleach Calculation of biological indicies diversity and water quality indicesindicates very poor water quality at the downstream of the IS WWTP compared with the two upstreamstations in October 2015 Comparing the results of diversity and biological indices BMWP and ASPT in this study with results of the previous studies in 1999 2004 and 2006 the years before the use of thebleach showed a decrease in some benthic community diversity and remove of sensitive species in2015 According to the spatial and temporal changes of the flow and water quality of the ZayandehroudRiver in approximately the last 20 years and their relation to biological parameters of the benthiccommunity of river it can be concluded that using of the bleach as disinfectant maybe have negativeeffects on benthic community Key words Bleach Water Quality Wastewater Quality Benthic Macroinvertebrates
