Fabrication of Molybdenum disulfide solid lubricant coatings on the anodic aluminum oxide layers and study the tribological properties Mohammad Karimi Alavijeh mohammad karimi@ma iut ac ir Date of Submission 2016 06 25 Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisors Hamid Reza Salimi Jazi hrjazi@cc iut ac ir Hosein Edris h edris@cc iut ac irAbstractNowadays due to an extensive use of aluminum in various industries improving its wear properties has beenreceived lots of attentions The aim of this study is to fabricate MoS2 solid lubricant layers on the anodic aluminumoxide substrate and tribological properties were characterisared For this purpose two types of anodic aluminumoxide substrates were created in voltages of 80 and 100 V 0 5 2 5 wt of MoS2 powder particles were added to150ml deionized water with 0 09 g polyethylene glycol non ionic surfactants and 0 01 g ionic surfactant Sodiumdodecyl sulfate Suspension stability was measured and suspension by the value of 1 5 wt of MoS2 was selectedas the optimal value MoS2 coating were deposited by the electrophoretic coating process in periods of 1 and 2minutes and at voltages of 20 40 60 and 80 V on both substrates Evaluation and characterization tests such ashardness X ray diffraction scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy were performedon the surface of coatings Results showed that the pore size of 30 nm was formed in the anodizing process Because of long time process some of these large voids size could reached to approximately 1 m By increasingthe pore size the hardness of coatings reduced The coating thickness increased by applied high voltage Toinvestigate tribological properties of coating wearing tests were carried out under 5N load and 0 05m s speedcondition by using AISI 52100 steel pin The results showed that by increasing the voltage the amount ofdeposition of MoS2 on the surface was increased and the maximum amount of deposition was conducted at 80 V Moreover the amount of deposition increased and the rate of deposition was reduced The lubricant layer reducedthe friction coefficient from 0 9 to 0 05 Friction coefficient fluctuation was reduced significantly after coating Keywords Anodizing Solid lubricant Molybdenum disulfide Electrophoretic Wear
