101 The Effect of Potassium Silicate and Benzyladenine Foliar Application on Thermotolerance of Sweet Pepper PS301 Marjan Taheri marjan taheri@ag iut ac ir August 14 2016 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Maryam Haghighi Mhaghighi@cc iut ac irAbstract High temperature stress effects a change in the biochemical physiological and also molecular changes in plants metabolism such as chemical analysis of molecules destruction of nucleic acids Reduction in photosynthesis increase in respiration and disruption to membrane permeability These alterations in consequence cause damages to plant such as inhibiting its growth and reducing the yield This study was conducted in the greenhouses of Isfahan University of Technology to evaluate the effect of foliar application of Benzyl adenine and potassium silicate under high temperature condition on bell pepper in a factorial experiment as a completely randomized design with four concentrations of Benzyl adenine 0 0 06 0 6 and 6 mg l and two levels of potassium silicate 0 and 5 Mm and two temperature treatments 25 2 and 35 2 with six replication repetition for each treatment The results of the study indicated that the use of Benzyl adenine 6 mg l promotes growth and morphological indices increases prolin phenol level and antioxidant capacity Moreover the application of Benzyl adenine 6 mg l stimulates the improvement in the cell membrane and decrease in electrolyte leakage in bell pepper plants compared to controlled plants Application of level 5 mm potassium silicate made a significant impact on the fresh and dry weight of root and potassium concentration The use of Benzyl adenine in high concentrations particularly at a concentration of 6 mg l on plants under heat stress raised growth morphological indices Carotenoid prolin and phenol Application of 5mM potassium silicate in plants under stress increased the fresh and dry weight of root and potassium concentration and antioxidant capacity Furthermore the combination of Benzyl adenine and potassium silicate caused a positive effect on growth and yield The interaction of 6 mg l Benzyl adenine with 5 mm potassium silicate in particular lengthened the stalk stem increased dry weight of the root and SPAD index prolin and phenol in the shoot compared to control plants Finally it can be concluded that simultaneous application of Benzyl adenine with potassium silicate at high concentrations whether in optimum condition or stress one brings about a positive effect on morphological and physiological characteristics of plants Therefore damages caused by high temperature stress can be reduced by using these two compounds which in turn promote plant growth Keywords Heat Stress Benzyl adenine Potassium Silicate prolin Phenol Electrolyte Leakage
