Meshless Lattice Boltzmann Method Seyed Hossein Musavi hmusavi@me iut ac ir Date of Submission July 18 2016 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Supervisor Mahmud Ashra zaadeh mahmud@cc iut ac ir Advisor Ahmadreza Pishevar Department Graduate Program Coordinator Mohammad Reza Salimpour Abstract A meshless lattice Boltzmann numerical method has been developed The collision and streaming operators of the lattice Boltzmann equation have been separated as in the usual lattice Boltzmann models While the purely local collision equation has remained the same we have rewritten the streaming equation as a pure advection equation and discretized the resulting partial di erential equation using the Lax Wendro scheme in time and the meshless local Petrov Galerkin scheme based on augmented radial ba sis functions in space The proposed method has been implemented on a computer code Some well known benchmark uid ow problems namely the plane and circular Couette ows the three dimensional lid driven cavity ow and the impulsively started cylinder ow have been simulated for the validation of the proposed method Excel lent agreements with analytical solutions or with previous experimental and numerical results in the literature have been observed in all the simulations Although the compu tational resources required for the new meshless method per node are higher compared to that of the standard lattice Boltzmann method it has been shown that for cases in which the total number of nodes is signi cantly reduced such as ow in packed beds the present method actually outperforms the standard lattice Boltzmann method Keywords Lattice Boltzmann Meshless method Fluid ow Complex geometry 1 Introduction The lattice Boltzmann method LBM was developed in the late 1980s and the early 1990s 1 and since then applied in simulation of di erent uid ow problems 2 3 The main advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method are i it is simple especially in implementing on a computer code ii it has a local nature which leads to a high capability for parallel processing iii it can better represent microscopic interactions which makes the method successful in interfacial dynamics applications and iv it is not limited to the continuum assumption which enables the lattice Boltzmann method to simulate higher Knudsen number ow regimes compared to the Navier Stokes equations solvers These features make the lattice Boltzmann method a attractive alternative for computational uid dynamics Although at rst the lattice Boltzmann method was considered as an extension of the lattice gas automata 4 it was shown later 5 that the lattice Boltzmann equation is a special discretization of the discrete Boltzmann equation along characteristics Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran 5
