105 Application of rangeland health method and remotely sensed metrics in rangeland function assessment of Ghamishlou and Fereidonshar regions Isfahan province Mojgan Sabzalipour Sarab Saeedi m sabzalipoor@na iut ac ir December 27 2016 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree MSc Language PersianDr Hossien Bashari hbashari@cc iut ac irDr Reza Jafari reza jafari@cc iut ac irAbstractAssessing structure and function of range ecosystems is required for proper management of thisvaluable resource Range health is known as a simple and effective method for evaluating theeffects various management practices on rangeland function This method uses 17 indicators toassess ecological processes status in rangeland ecosystems including site stability hydrologicfunction and biological integrity Remote sensing techniques are widely used to assess rangelandecosystems because direct field methods are costly and time consuming This study aimed toevaluate function status of Ghamishlou located in Steppe zone and Meidanak rangeland locatedin Semi Steppe zone in Fereidonshahr using rangeland health method and leakiness index LI asa remotely sensed function metric Three grazing zones were selected in Ghamishlou NationalPark including places grazed with wild herbivores wild herbivores and livestock and onlylivestock and 9 site replications were selected in each place Three range places with variousgrazing pressure were selected in Semi Steppe rangelands of Meidanak including 6 slightlygrazed 8 moderately grazed and 8 severely grazed sites All the 17 rangeland healthindicators were evaluated in each site scored and classified in 5 classes extreme moderate toextreme moderate slight to moderate and none to slight Three rangeland health attributes werethen determined in each site by summation of the indicators and the sites were then categorizedhealthy at risk and unhealthy accordingly Landsat 8 2015 OLI image was used to calculate LI asan index of ecosystem function Ghamishlou and Meidanak study areas were divided into 30 and22 sub basins respectively and LI was calculated in each sub basin According to the Mannwhitney test rill and gully indicators in the Ghamishlou and gully wind erosion and sedimentationindicators in Meidanak were not identified as sensitive indicators of range health According to theresults LI of sub basins with different range health classes healthy at risk and unhealthy variedsignificantly p 0 01 LI had also high negative linear correlation with land cover r 0 85 andSAVI index r 0 61 in Ghamishlou area LI also had high negative linear correlation with landcover r 0 87 and NDVI r 0 79 in Meidanak area This study indicated high the potential ofboth field based health and remote sensing techniques for assessing ecosystems functionality inSteppe and Semi Steppe rangelands Keywords Rangeland ecosystem Reference site Hydrologic function Leakiness index OLIsensor
