AbstractTopological materials with topological phases are a new branches of matterialsthat have abstracted many physicists to study in this area These phases aredi erent from other phases of matter thanks to their topological aspects Theyare conductors in their surfaces and are insulators in bulk that can be distin guished by topological invariant from other phases There are many ways tomake these phases for instance exposing a honycomb lattice to a high magnetic eld at very low temperature It was proposed by Haldane in 1988 when he wasworking on a graphene lattice He was able to introduce the rst topologicalinvariant named chern number that is only zero in absence of high magnetic eld Another way was identi ed by Kane and Mele in 2005 In their modelthey could reach to topopogical phase by assuming a great interaction betweenspin of fermions and their angular momentom and introduced a topologicalinvariant named Z2 In this thesis we have studied the energy bands of honycomb lattice in presenceof spin orbit coupling and draw their phase diagrams Finally we have studiedthe e ect of uniaxial strain on the topological phase and have compared ourresults with other studies keywords topological phases quantum hall e ect spin orbit coupling e ect topological invariant uniaxial strain
