Hot Stamping Process Analysis of Auto B pillar Using Two Dimensional Finite Element Method Saeed Heydari Kebriti Saeed heydari@me iut ac ir Date of Submission April 10 2017 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mahmood Farzin farzin @cc iut ac irAbstract Hot pressing process is a complicated sheet forming process In hot pressing process sheet formingoperation is conducted at high temperatures about 800 to 900 C Forming at high temperatures reducesstresses and with less energy consumption however creating conditions of indie quenching causing the materialto become hardened after forming operation In hot pressing a hot sheet is placed inside the die and formedand cooled from beginning to end of process Using hot pressing process components can be produced withoptimized performance against sudden shocks and distortions such as vehicle crash This technology canproduce structures with high strength where good energy absorbers are entered into the system One of themain applications of this process is the production of sensitive components in a vehicle crash In the presentwork the main goal is to obtain main guide lines of hot stamping die design for production of B pillar In thehot stamping process the operation is performed based on controlling the material microstructure Microstructure percentage of material determines its mechanical properties To obtain a specificmicrostructures is performed by controlling the material cooling rate Material microstructure depends on phasetransformation and cooling rates which are very sensitive to the material used for such a process In this studyBoron alloy steels is used which has the characteristic of better control over its phase transformation duringthe process In the hot Stamping process phase control is conducted by controlling the cooling rate of partinside the die In this project a thermo mechanical finite element simulation is performed with ABAQUSsoftware to find the optimum parameters affecting the component mechanical properties in order to achievedesired conditions The results of the simulations show that the most effective parameters in controlling coolingrates are pressure contact between the sheet and die and initial temperature of die To control the contactpressure three types of die were introduced and their advantages and disadvantages are expressed and finallythe best die type is specified in terms of its feasibility and efficiency in order to reach the desired microstructuremore accurately Keywords Hot Stamping Phase transformation indie quenching Boron steel Finite elementsimulation
