Effects of Carboxymethyl Cellulose Treatments on Postharvest Life of Tomato Fruits Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv Honey Samira Hoghoughi hoghoughi ss@yahoo com April 30 2017 Department of Horticultural Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Prof Ali A Ramin aa ramin @cc iut ac irAbstractThe tomato Lycopersicon esculentum is one of the most widely consumed fresh vegetables in theindustrialized world Tomatoes are a rich source of fibre vitamin A C and lycopene and studies indicatethat thy have an important role in human nutrition On of the main limitations in the tomato trade preservation and its export is the life after harvest and microbial spoilage will lead to a lot of waste Butby means of postharvest technologies we can control their decay to same extent It seems edible coatingsare good antibacterial resoueces to preserve ageicultural crops Today interest in the use of ediblecoatings biodegradable natural rather than synthetic waxes commercial for maintaining postharvestquality of products has increased Edible coatings function as an effective semipermeable barrier torespiratory gases and water vapor between the fruit and the surrounding atmosphere and can create amodified atmosphere which delays senility It can be potentially used for extending shelf life andmaintaining the quality of foods by preventing changes in aroma taste texture and appearance It seemscarboxymethyl cellulose CMC is a good resource to preserve agricultural crops The current experimentwas conducted to find the effect of carboxymethyl cellulose on postharvest life of tomato fruit cv HONEY The first experiment was conducted to asses the age of storage life of tomato using treatmentsof carboxymethyl cellulose 1 0 75 0 5 0 25 After treatment the fruits were presereved in acold storage with 10 C and 60 70 for 40 days After that the fruits were taken out each 8 days and wereassesed to determine parameters such as weight loss firmness pH titratable acid soluble solids vitaminC Index taste lycopene content chilling injury and Total antioxidant The second experiment to simulateshelf life of fruits coming out of cold storage was conducted similar to the first experiment Thedifference is that fruits after treatment were kept in cold storage for 30 days and then were stored for 6days at room temperature and were tested at intervals of every 2 days Both of experiments wereperformed as a split plot design in time in a complete randomized design with three replications Theresults of the first experiment showed that CMC has a significant effect on measured indexes The resultsshowed that The highest amount of firmness titratable acid vitamin C and Total antioxidant and Thelowest weight loss Index taste lycopene content chilling injury compared to control groups treated withCMC 1 was observed that with CMC 0 75 showed no significant difference The lowest solublesolids and pH recorded with CMC 1 that had no significant difference with two treatments 0 75 and0 5 The results of the second experiment showed that CMC treatments had a significant effect onall measured indexes The results showed that The lowest weight loss soluble solids Index taste lycopene content chilling injury and The highest amount of firmness titratable acid vitamin C and Totalantioxidant compared to control groups treated with CMC 1 was observed which had significantdifference with the other treatments In the second experiment had the highest vitamin C content intreatments CMC1 that were had no significant difference with two treatments 0 75 and0 5 AlsoThe lowest amount of pH was recorded with CMC1 and CMC0 75 which they had no significantdifference wiht each other effect of time on all measured traits was significant in each of the twoexperiments The reciprocal effect of treatment and time was significent in all charactristics According tothe result of this study treated fruits with CMC 1 and CMC0 75 result in longer maintenance ofquali
