69 Characterization of Aluminum A356 Aluminum 7075 Bimetal Fabricated by Compound Casting Process Amir Moshiri a moshiri@ma iut ac ir Department of Materials Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Mahmoud Meratian Assoc Prof E mail meratian@cc iut ac irAboozar TaheriZadeh Assist Prof E mail a taheri@cc iut ac irAbstractBecause of desired mechanical and physical properties aluminum is the most widely usednon ferrous metal in industry and engineering applications By changing the chemicalcomposition of aluminum its properties can be changed to achieve the desired properties As technology advances for utilizing of several properties of aluminum alloysimultaneously engineers tend to use of bimetal or trimetal composite parts Manydifferent methods have been used to produce these parts which casting method especiallycompound casting is one of the best options in terms of creating a perfect metallurgicalbond The basic requirement in the production of casting these parts is establishing a firmconnection between the two metals In bimetallic parts that one of the metals is aluminum aluminum oxide prevents from creating such a connection With chemical preparation andremoving the oxide layer this problem has been fixed However this solution requiresspecial equipment for coating which increases the difficulty time and cost of the process In this study the production of aluminum A356 aluminum 7075 bimetal using compoundcasting without surface preparation of insert was successfully and the interface betweentwo metals were characterized For this purpose three different molds for casting sampleswere used and the effects of pouring melt into the mold melt temperature inserttemperature the cooling conditions and surface conditions of insert was evaluated on thequality of the interface Then the samples were characterized The microstructure ofinterface was analyzed using an optical microscope The mechanical properties of theinterface with the outside and micro hardness tests were evaluated The mechanicalproperties of the interface were evaluated by push out and micro hardness tests Surfacecombination of the alloys was also investigated by line scan elemental analysis using ascanning electron microscope The results showed that in the vertical casting due totemperature drop the interface is not uniform throughout the sample So that pressurelesshorizontal casting method in sand mold with entry of melt from beside melt temperature720 C and polished insert with sandpaper showed the best results The push out testresults indicated uniform shear strength in the samples that were cast horizontally Also thesample was made under the same conditions and without any surface preparation forinvestigating the surface roughness effect on the quality of the interface The resultsshowed that the surface roughness with increasing thermal shear stress applied to thethermal oxide film by the melt helps break it and increasing the interface shear strength Keyword Aluminum Bimetal Compound Casting Interface Push out test Macrocomposite
