Investigation of the Effect of Nanosilica and SEBS g MA Grafting Agent on the Mechanical and Physical Properties of Styrene Ethylene Butylene Styrene Thermoplastic Elastomer HamidReza Jafari Sedehi hamidgf7@gmail com Date of Submission Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Dr Nouri Khorasani saied@cc iut ac irAbstractIn this study Styrene Ethylene Butylene Styrene terpolymer was mixed with certain amounts ofMaleic Anhydride and Dicumil Peroxide using an internal mixer to graft Maleic Anhydride ontothe terpolymer Afterwards different weight percentages of silica nanoparticles and the graftedpolymer were added to the terpolymer and mixed using internal mixer At the next step mechanicalproperties of each sample were compared to other samples The optimum grafting percentage wasreached at 3 wt of Maleic Anhydride and 0 11 wt of Dicumil Peroxide It was observed thatthe hardness of samples with higher amounts of silica nanoparticles was 17 more than the othersamples Also tensile tests showed that by increasing the amount of nanoparticles to a certaindegree mechanical strength will increase and after that it will decrease It is noteworthy thatsamples having 3 phr of nanoparticles had higher alongation at break values TEM images showedthat samples with 3 phr silica nanoparticles had the best dispersion In addition the peaks assignedto carbonyl groups have been observed in FTIR spectra and showed that maleic anhydride isgrafted successfully to the terpolymer Keywords Nanocomposite SEBS Silica Nanoparticles Compatibilizer
