128 Isfahan University of Technology Department of Textile Engineering Experimental study and modeling of bending and tensile behavior of non crimp 3D orthogonal woven fabric Shohreh Minapoor shohreh minapoor@tx iut ac ir 2017 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree PhD Language FarsiDr Saeed Ajeli supervisor sajeli@cc iut ac irDr Mohammad Sheikhzadeh advisor m sh110@cc iut ac irDr Mahdi Salmani Tehrani advisor tehrani@cc iut ac irAbstract Non crimp 3D orthogonal carbon weave is a specific type of 3D woven fabric which is expected to have highperformance as composite reinforcement due to its unique architecture high functional ability and light weight benefits Although there have been many attempts to study and model the mechanical behaviorof composites reinforced with this fabric a few works have been done on own non crimp 3Dorthogonal weave Therefore more investigations are necessary in this regards The aim of this researchis producing non crimp 3D orthogonal carbon weave investigating into tensile and bending behavior andfinite element modeling of it First a proper design was proposed for the weave device by studying theadvantages and disadvantages of methods were devised so far Then developed device with the possibility ofsimultaneously yarn insertion was designed and made Three different orthogonal weaves in terms of carbonfiber tow type binder yarns insertion density and longitude yarn s pre tension were produced The study isfocused on realization bending and tensile behavior of weave and measurement of main bending and tensileparameters including stress strain and modulus For this purpose three point bending and uniaxial tensiletest methods are used and the load displacement curves are analyzed A comprehensive study on the flexuraland tensile performance of carbon composite reinforcements was accomplished and the influence of fiberand weave s parameters such as type of carbon fiber tow geometry of weave and fiber volume fraction onmechanical behavior of non crimp 3D orthogonal carbon fabric is investigated It was difficult to distinguishthe initial straight line portion of the load deflection curve of non crimp 3D orthogonal carbon samplesunder bending due to their forms and analysis of such curves hasn t been done yet So in this work anattempt was made by fitting a trilinear model to load deflection curve ANOVA analysis results at 95 significant level showed that all three parameters carbon fiber tow type warp and weft insertion density andlongitude yarn s pre tension have significant effect on porosity modulus of elasticity in bending and tensile
