AbstractNowadays aluminum composites possess remarkable engineering importance due to theirsuitable properties But because of the welding limitation of these materials their use hasbeen limited Aluminum nanocomposites are always more expensive than conventionalmaterials in the industry Due to the abundance and cheapness of the montmorillonitenanoclay these particles were used as reinforcing particles in this study Powder metallurgyand extrusion process was employed for fabrication of Al composite samples containing 0 1 2 6 and 10 of nanoclay Due to the importance of the aluminum compositesbonding the optimum specimen was joined by transient liquid phase TLP and its propertieswere investigated Optical and scanning electron microscopes were used for microstructuralstudies Phase investigation was performed by X ray diffraction and EDS Moreover mechanical evaluation including tensile and compressive tests micro and macro hardnesswere performed The results showed that the montmorillonite nanoclay causes improvement ofthe nanocomposites mechanical properties by mechanisms such as Orowan and thermalexpansion mismatch between reinforcement and Al matrix Ultimate tensile strengths wereincreased about 31 46 62 and 95 for the composite samples with 1 2 6 and10 nanoclay respectively Investigations showed that the experimental yield strength of thecomposite specimens was less than theoretical yield strength The reason for this was thepresence of porosities agglomeration phenomenon and the assumptions in the equations Thecomposite sample with 2 nanoclay was selected as the optimum sample which showed anincrease of 63 42 and 53 for hardness tensile and compressive strength respectively By adding the nanoclay to the Al matrix the complete ductile fracture mechanism changed tothe shear ductile fracture The results of the transient liquid phase bonding of the Al 2 nanoclay composite revealed that there is an accumulation of reinforcement particles aroundthe joint interface This was decreased by increasing bonding time Phases investigationshowed that Al CuAl2 and Si was formed in the bonded area The copper diffusion toaluminum was approximately 600 m in each side of the base metal which caused thehardness of this area increased from about 60 HVN to 90 HVN The maximum bonding shearstrength of the samples was achieved about 89 of the parent metal for 180 min the TLPbonded specimen Keywords Aluminum matrix composite montmorillonite nanoclay Transient liquid phase mechanical properties
