179 New Families of Flying Capacitor Based Multilevel Converters with Reduced Components Javad Ebrahimi Jouzdani Javad ebrahimi@ec iut ac ir October 2017 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology 84156 83111 Isfahan IranSupervisor Hamidreza Karshenas Karshen@cc iut ac irAdvisor Alireza Bakhshai alireza bakhshai@queensu caDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Mohammadreza Taban mrtaban@cc iut ac ir Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan8415683111 Iran Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Queen s University Kingston ON K7L 3N6 CanadaAbstract This thesis presents new topologies for multilevel converters based on flying capacitor multicell FCM structure The proposed quadruple FCM converter has a modular multicell structure which can be easilyextended to increase the number of output voltage levels Multilevel converters with one dc voltage source areattractive in many applications as they do not need rather expensive and bulky multi winding input transformerconnection at the dc side On the other hand not all classic multilevel converters with one dc source can produceany desirable number of output voltage levels at all power factors and or modulation indexes In this thesis two hybrid structures are proposed in which six and five voltage levels can be realized at the ac terminals Themodulation technique and the control strategy for the flying capacitor voltages balancing are presented Toshow the advantages of the proposed converters different performance criteria such as switch count and rating the size of capacitors switching frequency and power losses are compared with other existing topologies Theresults indicate that the proposed structure are superior to other six level converters from different standpoints Simulation results are used to further evaluate the performance of the proposed converter The laboratory typeexperimental setups are used to validate the theoretical results Key Wordscapacitor voltage balancing flying capacitor multicell converter hybrid topology phase shifted carrier pulsewidth modulation multilevel converter space vector modulation Introduction The industrial demand of high power apparatus has been responded by power electronicsresearch community through two ways development of power semiconductor switches withhigher power rating and proposing high power converter topologies The latter is mainlyaddressed by developing the so called multilevel converter topologies built using maturedmedium voltage and current devices L G Franquelo et al 2008 Multilevel converters are superior to classical and well known two level converters fromdifferent aspects such as better voltage quality in terms of harmonic distortion low distortioninput current lower switching frequency and hence lower switching loss and higherefficiency high modularity functionality with some faulty components lower commonmode voltages and lower electromagnetic interference S Kouro et al 2010 Therefore
