Numerical Simulation of Biomechanical Functionality of Compression Stockings and their contact with Body Atefeh Ghanbari Velashani a ghanbari@tx iut ac ir Date of Submission Jun 21 2017 Department of Textile Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Mohammad Zarrebini zarrebini@cc iut ac ir Dr Afsaneh Valipouri valipouri@cc iut ac ir Advisor Dr Nima Jamshidi n jamshidi@eng ui ac ir AbstractThe use of graduated compression stockings GCS with the aim of prevention and treatment of venousdisorders is wide spread Advantages of the use of these textiles in the medical field are universally proven However their exact functional performance in respect of contact of these textile structures with the bodyand the mechanism by which treatment is achieved is not fully understood Direct pressure measurementusing available tools cannot yield to a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between stockings andthe body This work aims to develop a 3D biomechanical mathematical model that can provide a dynamicalnumerical simulation of the interaction between the leg and the compression stockings This model is basedon an actual geometry of female leg The geometry was obtained by reconstruction of 3D CT images and thereal size together with the mechanical properties of two commercially available stockings The biomechanicalsolid leg model was composed of tibia and fibula soft tissues An orthotropic shell model was assumed forthe stockings The wearing of the stockings was dynamically simulated This was based on relative slidingcontact phenomenon between two objects The displacement of the stockings hemline was set at 280mm Thesurface pressure distribution pressure magnitude tension and stress were simulated using two commerciallyavailable compression stockings in pressure classification of 23 32 mmHg It was found that the simulatedresults were compatible with those experimentally obtained results of KIKUHIME apparatus In addition thereaction of the soft tissue characteristics to the compression treatment was analyzed Results indicated thatupon a decrease in the elasticity module of the soft tissue its tendency to change form increases therefore the maximum exerted pressure on the leg decreases The mechanical properties of the graduated compressionstockings also affect the pressure exertion and distribution on the leg It was concluded that the developedmodel can successfully be used for prediction and illustration of performance of pressure and static stress thatoccurs during wearing of the compression stockings The model is also can be used for enhancement of thedesign of compression stockings The model also provdes full understanding of the compression mechanismof the stockings and enhancement of their medical applications Keywords Compression stockings Bio mechanical simulation pressure distribution mechanical interaction stockings
