Environmental Life Cycle Assessment of Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management System in Ardebil City Hadi Nazari Hadi na23@gmail com December 31 2017 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language PersianDr Norolah Mirghafari mnorolah@cc iut ac irDr Hossein Moradi hossein moradi@cc iut ac irDr Mortaza Alighadri m alighadri@arums ac irAbstractToday along with the industrialization the population growth is increasing and the quality andquantity of the wastes are becoming a problem in the cities The management of wastes has been oneof the most important issues in recent decades in human communities Therefore development of thewaste management system is essential which can be assessed by different tools such as life cycleassessment Using the life cycle assessment has a comprehensive look at the entire processes and theenvironmental impacts In this research the life cycle effects assessment method was used to assess theenvironmental and economic impacts of various waste management options in Ardebil For thispurpose after reviewing the current management status in Ardabil city as well as considering thequantity and quality of waste produced and the new ways of waste disposal five scenarios weredefined These five scenarios include 1 waste collection separating composting unsanitary landfillwithout collecting and extracting energy 2 waste collection separation compost and anaerobicdigestion waste incineration plant landfilling of residues and ash in the sanitary landfill 3 wastecollection separation garbage power plant landfilling of residues and ash in landfill along withmethane capture and energy recovery 4 waste collection separation at source with 6 increase incapacity composting burial in sanitary landfill along with methane capture and energy recovery and 5 waste collection without separation at source non sanitary landfill without collecting andextracting energy Then the scenarios were modeled using the IWM 2 to estimate the environmentalimpacts and the cost of scenarios The results showed that the fourth scenario which assumed 20 wasfor separation and recycling about 65 was transferred to the compost plant and the rest to sanitarylandfill site is the optimum scenario for waste management system of Ardebil city Additional toeconomic benefits the fourth scenario was ecologically selected as it has the highest recycling ratescompared to the other scenarios Therefore this scenario prevents the production of contaminants andalso makes significant economic benefits Moreover the fifth scenario which shows the current wastemanagement system in Ardebil is the worst environmentally and economically scenario where thereis unsanitary landfill with no gas collection In the fifth scenario the highest amount of methaneproduction was obtained compared to other scenarios Keywords Life cycle assessment Municipal waste management Composting Recycling Wasteincineration IWM 2
