Partially balanced incomplete block designs with two associate classes Ghazal Shahnam pour g shahnam@math iut ac ir 2017 Department of Mathematical Sciences Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Supervisor Dr Saeid Pooladsaz spooladsaz@cc iut ac ir 2010 MSC 62xx 62Kxx 62K10 Keywords Balanced incomplete block designs Partially balanced incomplete block designs Association schemes AbstractThe incomplete block designs especially balanced incomplete block designs BIBDs have manycommon uses One of the important properties of balanced incomplete block designs is that thetreatment di erences have the same variance But these designs are not available for every parametriccombination Also even if they exist for a given number of treatments and block size it may requiretoo many blocks Due to the restriction on existing the BIBDs a wider class of designs which arecalled partially balanced incomplete block designs with m associate classes P BIBD m introduced In these designs only some of treatment di erences are estimated with the same accuracy In theother words the pairs of treatments can be arranged in di erent associate classes such that thedi erences between the pairs of treatment e ects in the same classes are estimated with the sameaccuracy Therefore they are called partially balanced incomplete block designs The de nition ofthese designs is based on the association schemes and accordingly they are divided into several typessuch as partially balanced incomplete block designs with two associate classes In this thesis we introduce various types of PBIBD with two associate classes such as group divisibledesign triangular design cyclic design and latin square designs with i constraints The constructionof these designs is one of the important issues that scientists have been studying in recent years Also some methods of constructions of these designs are discussed The group divisible designs constitute the largest simplest and perhaps the most important typeof two associate partially balanced incomplete block designs in which the combinatorial properties
