112 Improvement of Urban Wastewater Moved Through Two Porous Medias with Horizontal and Vertical Flows Cultivated with Carex Amir Sheykhan a sheykhan@ag iut ac ir January 10 2018 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi Supervisor Mohammad Shayan Nejhad Shayannejad@ cc iut ac ir Abstract Increasing population growth and the development of agricultural and industrial activities and successive droughts in most countries in the dryland belt have led to intense of the water crisis especially in arid and semi arid regions such as Iran Regarding the limitation of conventional water resources in recent years the use of unconventional water to escape the crisis and the optimal use of permanent water resources have been considered by human societies Unconventional water treatment systems such as wastewater are costly and economical in small and rural communities Phytoremedition is a new technology used as a natural treatment by resistant plants to remove or reduce the concentration of organic pollutants minerals and hazardous compounds of the environment including heavy metals petroleum products and herbicides One of the natural treatment methods is the use of constructed wetland In this research the performance of hybrid wetland with perlite bed and Cyperus plant on urban wastewater has been investigated The combination of perlite as a porous media with absorption of elements as well as a plant of Cyperus with high phytoremedition has had a significant performance In this study ponds were constructed with 0 75 m width 0 5 m depth and 6 m length and were designed on the margin of wastewater treatment lagoon of Isfahan University of Technology In order to evaluate the performance of constructed wetland the effects of three and six days hydraulic retention time were studied using a completely randomized design The efficiency of removal of total coliforms fecal coliform BOD5 COD phosphate TS TDS nitrate and ammonium during the three days hydraulic retention time were 97 7 96 9 48 48 8 4 8 13 1 9 8 56 3 and 37 8 percent decreased respectively In the hydraulic retention time six days the removal efficiency was equal to 98 2 98 9 17 5 88 2 7 1 9 6 5 2 77 5 79 In total the constructed wetland with the above mentioned characteristics was successful in removing total coliform fecal coliform COD BOD5 ammonium and nitrate and it was acceptable to remove other parameters Keywords wastewater hybrid constructed wetland perlite cyperus
