78 Distribution Modeling and Habitat Suitability of Persian Leopard in Taleghan District and Surrounding Lands Zahra Sadat Hoseini zs hoseini@na iut ac ir 5 March 2018 Departmentof Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree MSc Language Persian Dr Mansoureh Malekian mmalekian@cc iut ac ir Abstract Persian leopard Panthera pardus saxicolor is one of the largest leopard subspecies native to west Asia and it is classified as endangered on the IUCN red list The first step in effective conservation of this species is identifying the remaining habitats Species distribution modeling with an understanding of the most important biological factors affecting the presence of a species we can predict favorable habitats for the species In the current study 135 present points of the Persian leopard in Taleghan and surrounding lands and eight independent environment variables were used in a 40 kilometer buffer to model distribution of the species and assess the habitat suitability Generalized linear model GLM and three machine learning algorithms including gradient boosting machine GBM random forest RF and maximum entropy MAXENT were used within the framework of the BIOMOD package and the final results were presented as an ensemble model The AUC values for all models were more than 0 80 suggesting well performance of all models The ensemble model with the AUC of 0 97 had the best performance The TSS values of the models ranged from 0 52 to 0 86 indicating high accuracy and excellent performance of the models The total study area is about 16553 km2 and GLM GBM RF and MAXENT respectively predicted 80 30 15 and 57 of the total area as suitable habitats for the species The Final ensemble model predicted about 27 of the total area as optimal habitats for the Persian leopard The average importance of variables was calculated for all models and two variables including distance to city and roads and topography were the most important influential variables on the distribution and habitat suitability of the leopard The results of this research can be used to identifying potential habitats for the Persian leopards for further conservation and prioritizing the conservation of existing habitats Key words Persian leopard distribution modeling habitat suitability ensemble model GBM model GLM model MAXENT model RF model
