Effect of drought stress and exogenously applied salicylic acid and glycine betaine on physiological and biochemical characteristics and yield of potato cultivars Mouhamad Alhoshan hoshan77@yahoo com July 21 2018 Department of Horticultural Sciences IsfahanUniversity of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran1st Supervisor Ali Akbar Ramin aa ramin@cc iut ac ir2st Supervisor Morteza Zahedi mzahedi@cc iut ac ir Professor of Physiology of Horticultural Crops Department of Horticulture Sciences College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of Technology Associate Professor of Crop Physiology Department of Agronomy and Plant Breeding College ofAgriculture Isfahan University of Technology AbstractPotato is one of the most importantant crops in the world that ranks as the fourth majorcrop after wheat rise and maize economically Water deficit is the first limiting factorfor crop productivity in the majority of the world agricultural areas The production ofresistant potato varieties to water deficit is considered one of the objectives of plantbreeding in areas where exprience limiting resources of water Therefore due to theimportance of potato cultivation in Iran and the limitation of water resources thisresearch was conducted to investigate the responses of ten cultivars of the mostcommonly cultivated potato cultivars in Iran to water stress in order to determine therelationship between the measured traits and the resistance of cultivars for betterunderstanding of physiological and biochemical basis of tolerance to water deficit Thisresearch was conducted in the form of a field experiment and two pot experiments Inthe field experiment and the first pot experiment ten potato cultivars Agria Arinda Marfona Banba Born Sante Milva Satina Jelly and Spirit were evaluated under twoirrigation levels 30 and 60 depletion of soil water in the field experiment and 30 and80 depletion of soil water in the pot experiment The field experiment was conductedin a randomized complete block design with three replications and the first potexperiment was conducted in greenhouse as a factorial based on a randomized completeblock design with four replications Water deficit treatments were applied in the fieldexperiment from 50 flowering satge untill tuber harvesting and in the first potexperiment during the vegetative growth stage In these two experiments the amount ofphotosynthesis stomatal conductance photosynthetic water use efficiency quantumefficiency of photosystem II chlorophyll content plant dry weight and tuber yield 147
