Introducing a Geocast Routing Protocol in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks Maryam Ataei maryam ataei@ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2018 07 27 Isfahan University of Technology Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisors Dr Faramarz Hendessi Advisor Dr Behrooz ShahgholiAbstractVehicular Ad Hoc Networks VANETs are a subset of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks MANETs inwhich each node with another node in the presence of a communication path exchanges informa tion The existence of V2V and V2I communications for these networks is considered Vehicularad hoc networks have unique features such as high node mobility variable topology frequentlydisconnecting and temporary network fragmentation which distinguishe these networks frommobile networks And so we need special routing protocols for these networks In many applica tions of vehicular ad hoc networks such as traffic control entertainment and the transmission ofadvertising messages there is a need for the transfer of information to a wide area and a group ofvehicles in a special region that the geocast routing protocol can support this connection There fore improvements in the performance of these protocols have been highly considered One of thekey challenges of this protocol is how to send information to the destination region Most of thegeocast routing protocols flood the message to the destination which have high overhead unreli able packet delivery and therefore low packet delivery ratio is also a problem of these protocols Some methods for improving protocol overhead issue use unicast protocols to send informationto the destination region but the number of delivery packets decrease and delay increase Al though protocol overhead is an important issue the problem of delay and packet delivery ratioare also very important in these protocols Therefore in this research the OLSR protocol whichis an Optimised Link State Routing protocol is used to send the message to the destination re gion which reduces the delay and have significant delivery ratio but despite the overhead of thisprotocol is less than flooding methods compared to the unicast protocols such as AODV OLSRhas high overhead To overcome this problem improving the OLSR protocol by local setting ofcontrol message intervals for each nodes has been suggested Tuned OLSR The rateless codingmethod has also been used to improve the reliability and increase packet delivery ratio Sim ulation results show that with increasing number of vehicles and consequently increasing roaddensity Tuned OLSR protocol has a good performance In fact in the high density of vehicles OLSR and Tuned OLSR protocols send more packets with less delay than unicast protocols suchas AODV Although OLSR protocol compared to Tuned OLSR protocol send more packets tothe destination region with less delay but has high overhead In Tuned OLSR by local settingcontrol message intervals this overhead is significantly reduced Also according to the simula tion results it is expected that in the highest number of vehicles Tuned OLSR protocol comparedto OLSR protocl will send more packets with less delay and the overhead will also increase witha slower slope Keywords Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks Geocast routing OLSR routing protocol Rateless coding
