Comparative study of stability of several Lattice Boltzmann methods for fluid flow simulation at different Reynolds numbers Alireza Ghavami nia alirezaGhavaminia@chmail ir 19 November 2018 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree Master of Science Language FarsiSupervisor Mahmud Ashrafizaadeh Assoc Prof mahmud@cc iut ac ir AbstractLattice Boltzmann method is one of the most recent approaches among the computational fluid dynamics meth ods By the advent of the lattice Boltzmann method some problems have emerged implicitly among which thestability of the method in the simulation of fluid flows with different Raynolds numbers is one of the importantones In this study by means of the lid driven cavity flow the stability of several Lattice Boltzmann Meth ods i e Bhatnagar Gross and Krook BGK Multi Relaxation Time MRT Cascaded Central Moments Space CCMS Non Orthogonal Central Moments Space NOCMS and Constant Speed Kinetic Method CSKM have been compared The results show that the BGK method has more limited stability compared with theother methods On the other hand in general the CSMS CSKM and the NOCMS are more stable than theMRT model The results also show that choosing the right set of relaxation time factors can enhance the sta bility and change the stability limits significantly In addition the computational costs of the aforementionedmethods are compared Results show that as a rule of thumb choosing a more stable method is a better strategyover decreasing the lattice spacings KeywordsLattice Boltzmann Method Numerical Stability Comparison Collision Models Numerical Study
