169Improving performance of close boiling distillation systems on the basis of vapor recompression and bottoms flashing Abolghasem Kazemi Abolghasem kazemi@ce iut ac ir Date of submission 2018 12 09 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree PhD Language FarsiSupervisors Prof Arjomand Mehrabani Zeinabad arjomand@cc iut ac ir and Dr Masoud Beheshti masbeh@yahoo com Abstract High energy consumption and low energy efficiency of distillation systems have led to extensive researchto improve the performance of these systems In this study vapor recompression and bottom flashingsystems have been investigated and some configurations have been proposed to improve their efficiency Inthe first part of this study several configurations of vapor recompression that were previously presentedwere compared and the configurations that showed the highest efficiency in reducing energy consumptionand process costs were identified In addition the strengths and weaknesses of each of the previous planswere determined Using the ideas and schemes a new system for the purification of sour water waspresented and the results of this section showed that using the concepts of vapor recompression heat pump significantl reduction of energy consumption and costs in various chemical processes can be obtained Based on the results using the proposed system in the process of sour water stripping 83 7 and 77 8 can be saved in heating and cooling utilities respectively In another section the ideas and designs thatwere proposed for vapor recompression were developed for use in the bottom flashing and the resultsshowed that the bottom flashing with heating recuperation could outperform vapor recompression system Based on this the use of the developed system of bottom flashing on the distillation of isobutane normalbutane has completely eliminated cooling sources and reduced 98 6 of the heating resources in thesystem It also reduced the total annual cost of the process by 19 compared with the typical distillationtower Meanwhile based on the concepts of vapor recompression and sudden product evaporation systemsfor the complex separation of three products such as direct sequencing indirect sequencing Petlyuk andside stripper designs were developed In five of the configurations designed in this section including aDBF with direct Petlyuk and side stripper and VRC with Petlyuk and side stripper the completeelimination of heating supplies were obtained and in the system of DBF direct sequence 95 8 reductionof cooling sources was obtained Economic analysis also revealed that all designed systems of vaporrecompression and bottom flashin improved the efficiency of the base system and using a system of bottomflashing on the Petlyuk arrangement a 30 9 decrease in total annual cost of the process is achievable Finally with the use of the main concepts of steam condensation a new distillation system was establishedthat does not require any use of heating resources in the system and uses water at ambient temperature asthe only source of heat in the system The results showed that the proposed system could in addition to thecomplete removal of heating resources reduce the required cooling utilities and electrical powerrequirements compared to the vapor recompression system By applying this configuration on thepropylene propane distillation tower a reduction of 17 6 in total annual cost of the process was achieved Key words Distillation Energy Vapor recompression Bottom flashing Configuration
