Effect of poultry manure and zeolite on soil water retention and salicornia persica growth under salinity treatments Ehsan Hajinili Ehsanhajinili@yahoo com January 12 2019 Department of Soil Science College of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Mohammad Ali Hajabbasi hajabbas@cc iut ac irAbstractA vast area of Iran is in the warm and dry climatic region of the world Addition ofamendments to soil for increasing water use efficiency soil water retention andimproving soil physical properties is one of the most important ways to cope with waterscarcity Among these materials natural amendments such as poultry manure andzeolite can be mentioned These modifiers are actually water storage treatments in thesoil and can retain water for a longer time to the plant One of the basic ways to exploitsoils in saline areas is planting halophytes and salinity resistant products Salicornia isone of the halophytes extremely tolerant to salinity conditions This research with theaim of evaluating the indigenous specie yield of Salicornia persica under irrigation withdifferent levels of salinity in a sandy soil was conducted in the greenhouses of theCollege of Agriculture Isfahan University of Technology in 2018 The experiment wasconducted in a completely randomized design with 3 replications The experimentconsisted of 13 treatments with 4 and 8 percent zeolite treatments and 4 and 6 percentpoultry manure at levels of 4 and 6 wt as water retention treatments in soil Salinitystress by irrigation water were in 6 levels of 80 160 and 200 mM for the 4 percent and400 600 and 800 mM for the 6 and 8 percent water retention treatments The 800 mMsalinity treatment resulted in the maximum amount of sodium in shoots for both soilwater retention treatments Different levels of salinity stress had a significant anddecreasing effect on the shoot potassium to sodium ratio Generally the trend reductionof the shoot potassium to sodium ratio by increasing salinity as well as increasedaccumulation of sodium ion in the vacuoles and transferring to the shoot in order toregulating osmotic pressure of cells indicate the salinity tolerance of Salicornia persica Salicornia persica plant showed to be able to survive very well in high salinityconditions 400 to 600 mM salinity The highest rate of water use efficiency in poultrymanure treatment was under the irrigation with a salinity level of 600 mM which wasincreasing 49 percent relative to the control The highest amount of soil salinity was inthe poultry manure treatment Evaluation of the soil water characteristic curve showedthat with increasing EC in all matric suctions the amount of moisture retained in soilstreated with poultry manure was higher than the zeolite treatment Keywords Water use efficiency water retention Salicornia Salinity stress 80
