Elevational changes in the deposition rate and concentration of selected heavy metals of dust in isfahan city Hamed Soltanalkotabi h soltanalkotabi@ag iut ac ir January 20 2019 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Language Farsi Degree M Sc Supervisor Hossein Khademi hkhademi@cc iut ac ir Supervisor Shamsollah Ayoubi ayoubi@cc iut ac irAbstractDust fallout is widely occurring in arid and semi arid regions of the world Dust particles are highlypolluted due to their fine size and also high absorption capacity Thus heavy metals can betransported on a large scale by binding to these particles Isfahan is the second largest industrial cityin Iran with various factories and mines including Montazeri s Refinery and Power Plant in thenorth Mobarakeh Steel Plant in the south and Iron Melting Complex in the west Manyinvestigations have been carried out on dust properties in Isfahan in recent decade but there is nocomprehensive study on the relationship between dust properties and elevation Therefore thisstudy was carried out to investigate changes in the concentration of heavy metals some chemicalcharacteristics texture and clay mineralogy of dust particles deposited in Isfahan city as affected byheight Dust samples were monthly collected for 5 months from October to late February 2012 byglass traps mounted on the roofs of one to four story buildings in six separate zones and one to threestory buildings in two distinct areas with a total of 30 sites and 150 samples in the city In Isfahan The rate of dust deposition was calculated as mass per unit area per unit time The totalconcentrations of lead zinc manganese chromium cobalt iron nickel and copper in dust sampleswere measured by atomic absorption spectrometry after digestion with 6 normal nitric acid Also pH and electrical conductivity were determined in a 1 2 extract of water to dust ratio and particlesize distribution of dust samples was determined using a laser dispersion apparatus Changes in claymineralogy of dust particles were also studied by X ray diffraction technique The results showedthat the average dust deposition rate decreased from 6 27 g m2 in October to 3 46 g m2 month inFebruary which could be attributed to the decrease in average wind speed and increase in soilmoisture The results of the size distribution of dust particles showed that with increasing height the sand content decreased while the percentage of clay and silt increased It was also found thatwith increasing height the percentage of particles smaller than 2 5 and 10 micrometers in thefourth floor increased by 32 31 and 30 percent respectively compared to that in the first floor The 109
