91 Isfahan University of Technology Department of Material Engineering Evaluation of suitable binders for use in spraying mass of copper industry furnacesAbstractRefractory corrosion decreases the life time of copper industry furnaces and facilitates finaldeterioration In this project development and life increase of magnesia chromiterefractories was investigated via producing a suitable gunning refractory material Theeffect of different binders i e sodium tri polyphosphate salicylic acid sulfamic acid sodium meta silicate boric acid and sodium hexa meta phosphate on physical andmechanical properties of magnesia chromite samples was investgated In this regard samples were fired at 300 C and 1150 C Fracture strength by Brazilian Test bulkdensity apparent porosity total porosity closed porosity and weight percent waterabsorption were measured Hot Modulus of Rupture HMOR and Slag Corrosion testswere performed on selected samples Optical Microscop OM X Ray Diffraction XRD and Scanning Electron Microscope SEM were used for surface characterizations andobservations Results indicated that sodium hexa meta phosphate and sulfamic acid withstrengths of 8 8 MPa and 6 6 MPa respectively at 300 C firing showed betterperformance than other investigated binders On the other hand boric acid and sodiumhexa meta phosphate samples fired at 1150 C with strengths of 3 8 MPa and 3 2 MParespectively showed better performance than other investigated binders HMOR test at1200 C for sulfamic acid boric acid and sodium hexa meta phosphate indicated that thesample strength when using sulfamic acid binder is almost three times more than otherbinders Surface investigation showed that suitable binding is developed between particlesand matrix for all investigated binders Also the presence of sulfur element at grainboundaries of sulfamic acid binder confirmed suitable binding XRD results showedformation of Cr5S6 and Cr7S8 phases at 300 C and formation of Cr2N at 1150 C forsulfamic acid binder For boric acid binder Mg2B2O5 and Mg3B2O6 phases were formed at300 C and 1150 C respectively Also for hexa meta phosphate binder Mg2P2O7 andNaCrP2O7 phases were formed at 300 C while Mg2P2O7 NaCrP2O7 and NaFe2O3 phaseswere formed at 1150 C Slag corrosion tests indicated that sodium hexa meta phosphatebinder had superior performance among other investigated binders Overal it wasconcluded that sodium hexa meta phosphate and sulfamic acid binders had superiorperformance among other binders investigated in this study for use in gunning mas appliedto repair of copper industry furnaces Keywords Binder Gunning Mass Slag Corrosion Copper Industry Furnaces MagnesiaChromite Refractories
