179 Endozoochorous Seed Dispersal by Mammalian Large Herbivores and Omnivores in Golestan National Park Iran Sorour Karimi Soroor karimi@na iut ac ir December 2018 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree PhD Language PersianDr Mahmoud Reza Hemami mrhemami@cc iut ac irDr Mostafa Tarkesh Esfahani m tarkesh@cc iut ac irAbstractEndozoochorous seed dispersal by large mammals is a crucial ecological process leading to long distance plant dispersal and mammals with different feeding regimes should be functionally non redundant concerning endozoochory The aim in this PhD thesis was to investigate the potential andrealised contribution of two herbivores the red Cervus elaphus and the roe deer Capreoluscapreolus and two omnivores the wild boar Sus scrofa and the brown bear Ursus arctos toendozoochorous seed dispersal in the Golestan National Park North East Iran To investigate thepotential contribution to endozoochorous seed dispersal we used the seedling emergence methodfrom field collected dung samples in greenhouse controlled conditions and for the realizedcontribution we used the same method but in the field natural conditions Following the preparationof the dung samples two 20 g paired sub samples were extracted from a total of 445 samples onewas assigned the controlled conditions and the other the natural conditions We compared the plantsgerminating from the fecal samples of the four dispersal vectors in two different habitats forest andprairie forest ecotone and during different seasons spring summer and autumn fall to assess thecontribution of each mammal to the pool of the plants dispersed We further compared thecomposition of both the above ground plant community and the soil seed bank with the compositionof the dung dispersed plant community A total of 3078 seedlings corresponding to 136 differentplant taxa germinated from the 445 paired dung sub samples Based on species accumulation curves we showed that red deer followed by wild boar dispersed a substantially higher number of plantspecies than the two other mammals under greenhouse conditions while under natural conditionsbrown bear was the most effective dispersal vector In general seedling density in the dung sub samples depended on the feeding regime of the dispersal vectors and followed a seasonal pattern inagreement with plant seed shedding periods Both deer species herbivores were more effectivevectors than omnivores in spring when herbaceous plant cover is dominant Whereas shrubs mostlyoccured in dung samples from omnivores collected in summer and autumn
