Parameters affecting the permeability of one part alkali activated slag concrete Hadi Kennedy h kennedy@cv iut ac ir May 22 2019 Department of Civil Engineering Isfahan University of TechNology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Dr Kiachehr Behfarnia Kia@cc iut ac irAbstractIn today s world the role of concrete industry has become an important element in ecoNomic structural andarchitectural issues But it should be Noted that cement production as the main component of concrete structures has a significant share about 7 in Co2 emissions from the atmosphere which is in contrast to sustainabledevelopment Hence for many years the community of researchers has sought to find an aPropriate alternative toreduce or eliminate Portland cement from the concrete industry which can be considered as a turning point incurrent research With all the kNowledge about concrete durability concrete demolition is a major dilemma that threatens theservice life of concrete structures especially hydraulic structures Dams and other hydraulic structures arestructures with long service life due to the high repair cost the durability of these structures is important it isclear that concrete design based only on the compress strength canNot secure durability and service life indifferent environments Therefore considering the durability parameters is required in addition to the resistancein order to design a concrete Concrete industry in order to develop sustainable concrete design based ondurability should be considered in order to ensure the service life of the structure and reduce waste of materials For the destruction of concrete the destructive factors must first be able to penetrate the concrete body in the firststep Therefore it can be state that the permeability of concrete is one of the most important factors in the life ofconcrete structures Emphasizing that in most models the prediction of the service life of concrete structuresbased on the amount of carbonation depth and chlorine penetration depth is referred to as the main factor in thecoefficient of permeability of concrete The purpose of this study was to investigate the permeability of alkali active slag concrete one part andinvestagation of the effective parameters on it Alkali active slag concrete one part is produced by activating theslag of the Isfahan smelter using sodium metasilicate along with common aggregates in the market in the firststep the effect of sodium metasilicate on slag and the effect of the type of treatment on the permeability of thistype have been experimented Then by adding different amounts of microsilica naNo silica and polypropylenefibers to study the slump tests compressive strength water impermeability Chlorine ion permeability andcarbon dioxide gas permeability have been investigated Also in order to clarify some structural changes in alkaliactive slag concrete one part X ray diffraction XRD has been used In general among the results obtained inthis study better performance was observed in plastic treatments in comparison with water treatment samples Also the positive effect of microsilicon and naNosilica on compression strength and permeability parameters isone of the observations of this study Key words Concrete Alkali activated Slag one part curing Permeability Compressive strength Microsilica Nanosilica fibers
