Improvement the Tribological Behavior of Roller Bearing by TiN TiAlN TiAlSiN Multilayer Coatings by physical Vapor Deposition Method Saeid Sabzehali s sabzehali@ma iut ac ir June 16 2019 Department of Material Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan IranDegree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Dr Ali Shafyei Prof Email shafyei@cc iut ac irAbstractThe wear and failure of the parts due to abrasion and costs associated with stopping the equipments of theproduction line are major the problems in the industry The purpose of this research was to investigate thechange in the tribological behavior of roller bearings by applying TiN TiAlN TiAlSiN multilayeredcoatings by physical vapor deposition via cathodic arc method In this research after multi layered TiN TiAlN TiAlSiN coating an elemental analysis test was carried out using EDS and phase analysis wasperformed by XRD The thickness of the layers was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy To evaluatethe mechanical properties and hardness of the coating the nanoindentor was used This test showed that thehardness and Young s modulus values for TiN TiAlN and TiAlSiN coatings have gradually increased Mechanical roughness meter was used to determine the roughness of each layer and substrate The nominalload required for the bearing test was No 11949 according to ISO 281 standard and the performance testwith the FE8 machine at nominal load axle load 5 5 KN and radial 3 3 KN 1 25 times the nominal load and at 1 5 times the nominal load Then after each test the roughness of the surface was measured and theprofile of the grooves created for depth and width was evaluated The scanning electron microscope was alsoused to study surfaces in contact with each other Elemental analysis showed the value of Si in TiAlSiNcoating is 1 85 The study of the phase analysis diffraction pattern provided by the XRD device showedthat the presence of Si and Al compounds in the coating is very weak and they are likely to be amorphous andthe hardness increased due to the presence of these compounds and the creation of a solid solution Thenanoindentor tests revealed that the hardness and Young modulus increased in different layers by adding theelements of Al and Si The hardness values of the substrate and TiN TiAlN and TiAlSiN coatings in terms ofvikers were 613 1917 2457 and 3396 respectively The roughness of TiN TiAlN and TiAlSiN coatings inmicron scale was 0 9 0 13 and 0 17 respectively These values indicate an increase in the roughness of thelayers by adding Al and Si elements due to the low aluminum melting temperature and droplets in themorphology of the coating Using microscopic and macroscopic studies the degradation mechanism wasevaluated in different loads the degradation mechanism in the nominal load was detected for both samplescoated and uncoated wear and the coating at this load showed good tribological properties Also the amountof lost material after coating was reduced by 63 However in the above loads the coating could not preventthe rolling contact fatigue mechanism and the amount of lost material in the coated sample increased and thecoating did not exhibit significant tribological behavior at higher loads Keywords Multilayer Coatings TiAlSiN Physical Vapor Deposition Roller Bearing Wear
