Design of an Automatically Controlled Wing to Harvest High Altitude Wind Energy Kite Energy Reza Mahdavi Arshad r mahdavi@me iut ac ir July 3 2019 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree Master of Science Language FarsiSupervisor Saeed Behbahani Assoc Prof behbahani@cc iut ac ir AbstractToday in many countries of the world energy and its related issues are one of the most important challenges Itis anticipated that wind energy at high altitudes can provide the necessary energy for all countries of the world Wind turbines have no competitive ability compared to fossil fuel power plants due to high infrastructure costs low output power from any turbine and insufficient wind resources at low altitudes The method used in thisstudy is based on the flight of tethered kites by wind force This technique as a subset of a new research fieldin Airborne Wind Energy is called Kite Energy In this way Kite flies by lifting force and drives the generatoron the ground Kite can achieve wind energy sources at high altitudes with higher energy levels and higherwind speeds than wind turbines Also these systems will have a lower cost of consuming power than otherrenewable energies In the proposed method the motion of a designed rigid kite which is similar to a UAV is controlled by the flaps angles The kite is guided in a path similar to 8 shape for the pumping cycle andenergy production The aerodynamic coefficients of the Kite have been extracted in the xflr5 software for aspecified range of the attack and flaps angles The kite is also navigated by controlling the angles of the flaps This study shows that a kite with 1 5 meter span can produce more than 1000 W electrical power KeywordsAirborn Wind Energy AWE Kite Enegy Lift Power Kites Pumping Cycle Ground Level Generators GLGs
