60Preparation and investigation the effect of poly ethylene octene elastomer graft Itaconic acid and Maleic anhydride on mechanical and barrier properties of LLDPE TPS OMMT packaging film Amir Kazemi amir kazemi@ce iut ac ir Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranSupervisor Saied Nouri Khorasani saied@cc iut ac irAbstractIn the face of synthetic polymersside effects on the environment the use of bio based andeco friendly polymers has been considered more than ever Among the bio polymers Starch is anatural polysaccharide that can be derived from renewable and inexpensiveresources Because of its low mechanical and physical properties and hydrophilic nature Ithas not employed in pristine for fabricating packaging films in industrial scale Therefore starch is blended with synthetic or other bio polymers to make eco friendly films In thisstudy starch was used as a biodegradable additive in a linear low density polyethylenematrix Due to oxygen permeability importance in packaging films nano clay was added toLLDPE TPS composite Since the clay plate dispersion plays a key rule on improvementof mechanical and physical properties of nano composite POE g IA based on biomonomeritaconic acid and POE g MA based on synthetic monomer maleic anhydride was used Inaddition Melt grafting reaction was used for the preparation of the functionalized polyethylene octene elastomer Moreover to identify functional groups in POE molecularstructure the grafting degree and ATR FTIR analysis were performed for the preparedsamples Thedispersion and interfacial adhesion of starch and nano clay to the LLDPEmatrix were evaluated by tensile falling weight XRD FE SEM and TEM tests XRDresults showed that the d spacing of nano clay plate was increased with POE g IAincorporation Considering the d spacing of the nano clay plate was alerted from 17 24 Aofor POE g MA to 18 14 Ao for POE g IA Furthermore morphological tests revealed thatincorporation of the functionalized POE improved the interfacial adhesion of nanoclay LLDPE and starch LLDPE On the other hand TEM images confirmed POE g IAmore exfoliated the nanoclay d spacing in comparison with POE g MA The evaluation ofthe mechanical properties of nano composites showed that POE g IA improved tensilestrength young modulus elongation at break and dart impact of LLDPE TPS nano clay composite respectively 8 55 5 00 11 50 7 40 more than POE g MA Since thebetter dispersion of nano clay plate with POE g IA the oxygen gas permeability decreasedby 13 94 in comparison with another functionalized POE Key words Poly ethylene octene elastomer Functionalization Nano clay LLDPE starch Itaconic acid Maleic anhydride
