64 Pd Pt modified GO as an Heterogeneous Catalyst for the Reduction of Nitroaromatic Compounds to amino aromatic compounds and Liquid Phase Hydrogenation of Phenol Over Au Pd Meso TiO2@TiO2 Catalyst Hossein Salahshournia Sep 2019 Department of Chemistry Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Isfahan IranSupervisor Prof M Ghiaci mghiaci@cc iut ac irDepartment Graduate Program Coordinator Dr M DinariIsfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Isfahan IranAbstractIn the first work different nitroaromatic compounds were successfully reduced to their corresponding aromaticamines with excellent conversion and selectivity in methanol by using Pd Pt nanoparticles immobilized on themodified grapheme oxide m GO and hydrogen as the reducing source In the second work phenol wassuccessfully and completely converted by hydrogen gas as a reducing agent to cyclohexanone andcyclohexanol It is possible to consider the contribution of this transformation to the optimal conditions forcyclohexane almost 100 This reaction was carried out in the presence of Au Pd Meso TiO2@TiO2 as a newand effective catalyst in dichloromethane solvent KeywordsModified graphene oxide Diisocyanate Nitro aromatics Hydrogenation Pd and Pt supported catalyst Heterogonous catalyst Meso TiO2 Hydrogenation Phenol Cyclohexanone Au and Pd supported catalystIntroduction Aromatic amines are important raw materials especially for the production of phenylisocyanates additives for rubber industries dyes and pigments pesticides etc The catalytichydrogenation of nitro aromatics which can be performed in the gas or liquid phase due toits environmentally friendly nature is one of the best methods for the manufacture ofaromatic amines In this respect different metal supported catalysts have been designed forthe hydrogenation of nitro aromatic compounds Various metals including Pd Pt Ni Ru and Cu are applied for this reduction different parameters such as the type of metal the sizeof the metal particles the support the solvent and hydrogen pressure are very importantfactors in this catalytic reaction 1 2 Among the mentioned metals Pt and Pd supportedcatalysts are the most effective catalysts in the liquid phase hydrogenation showing thedesirable activity and selectivity In terms of industrial applications the catalyst support notonly affects its catalytic activity but also influences its longevity and recovery from thereaction mixture The main concern in choosing a specific support is perhaps geometricaleffects which can prevent the aggregation of metal nanoparticles It is known that theinteraction between nano sized metals and metal oxide type supports can lead to the desirablecatalytic performance Also one of the best supports especially for palladium or platinum has been activated carbon Therefore a combination of these can make it possible to applygraphene oxide as a support which might be beneficial In recent years much research hasbeen done on graphene and graphene oxide due to their unique structures Especially in
