The feasibility of casing soil production for cultivation of Agaricus Bisporus using some organic waste Najmeh KazemiZahrani n kazemi@ag iut ac ir June 26 2019 Department of Soil Science Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language Farsi 1st Supervisor Hosein Shariatmadari shariat@cc iut ac ir 2 nd Supervisor Hamid Reza Eshghizadeh hr eshghizadeh@cc iut ac irAbstractGrowing population of the world has increased the need for healthy food sources Button mushroom with ahigh nutritional value seems a promising alternative in this regard They grow on agricultural and industrialwastes the edible mushrooms are rich in protein calcium phosphorus vitamins and all kinds of amino acids The life cycle of button mushroom has two vegetative and reproductive phases of which the latter takes placewithin the casing soil Most button mushroom species before producing the edible cap require a layer ofcovering soil which is called casting soil In fact having specific physical chemical and biological properties this soil stimulates the mushroom from the vegetative phase to the reproductive phase Peat is currently usedas the main ingredient of casting soil for the cultivation of button mushrooms in the world but due to its scarsand non renewable resources in Iran the top soils of the country s northern and western forests are insteadbeing mined and used as the casting soil However because of limitation and fragility of the forest ecosystemsin Iran this implication would also severely damage the environment and the natural resources The import ofpeat from other countries is also very costly and imposes many disadvantages for the producers On the otherhand paper and carton wastes sugar cane bagasse and the spent mushroom compost SMC are produced inlarge quantities in the country that their management and safe disposal takes considerable cost Therefore inthis study the mentioned waste materials was converted to compost and the application of these composts ascasting soil for button mushroom production was investigated in comparison to a peat sample Some of thephysical and chemical properties of the examined wastes and their composts were analyzed and evaluated forapplication as casting soil in comparison with the conventional peat sample Based on this evaluation theexperimental treatments were chosen The research was carried out using a randomized complete block designwith two factors of casting soil and Pseudomonas putida bacterial Inoculation 12 treatments and 2 replications in Isfahan University of Technology The treatments included composts of paper waste carton waste sugarcane bagasse SMC combinations of these composts and the peat sample as control At the beginning of eachharvest period the Pseudomonas putida bacteria were inoculated with a concentration of 108 and volume of300 ml per surface of each block of culture Some of the morphological traits such as yield mushroom number cap diameter base length dry matter and biological efficiency were measured in each harvest The results ofcasting soil treatments showed significant differences at 1 level in the first and third harvest flushes and atthe 5 level in the second harvest The mushroom yield at the first flush of carton and paper waste compostsshowed similar results with the control peat Overally among the experimental treatments the compost ofcarton waste showed the best result as the sum of yield for this treatment in three flushes was statistically thesame as control peat Key words Button mushroom casting soil organic wastes paper wastes cartoon wastes sugar cane bagasse spent mushroom compost pseudomonas putida bacteria 82
