Concentrating Foaming Agent in Soybean Press Cake Using Colloidal Gas Aphrons Mohammadhossein Kazemi Mohammadhossien kazemi@ce iut ac ir November 2019 Department of Chemical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language PersianSupervisor Dr Ali A Dadkhah E Mail Dadkhah@cc iut ac ir Dr Mohammad Chalkosh Amiri E Mail amir33@cc iut ac irAbstractResearchers are interested on better isolation of foaming agent saponin in soy and similarplants Saponin has applications in the food pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries In thisresearch the main objective was to investigate the possibility of using colloidal gas aphrons CGA as a green method in purification and recovery of foaming agent in dry soybeanpress cake Colloidal gas aphrons are microbubbles between 10 and 100 microns in size Looking at their structure a gas core is surrounded by a thin layer of surfactant and thesebubbles are produced by the application of high shear stress to the surfactant solution Moreover optimizing extraction of the foaming agent available in soybean press cake wasconsidered through studying three factors of temperature pH and time In this researchseveral parameters including pH initial concentration of saponin and geometricalparameters of the aphrone generating device AGD such as disk diameter and baffledistance were investigated It is found that increasing the initial concentration of saponin results in the lower purity and higher recovery This is due to slower discharge as a result ofincreasing viscosity by increasing the saponin concentration Also the impact of pH on thepurity and recovery was in line with the concentration effect Increasing of pH leads to theincreasing of the repulsive force between the bubbles and hence reduction of the dischargerate This in turn leads to lower purity and higher recovery rate Increasing the disk diameterin the AGD from 37 2 to 59 5 mm raised the shearing forces and volume of the air flowinginto the system and had a positive impact on recovery about 3 and purity about 10 of the saponin On the other hand shortening the baffle distance from 28 to 9 mm led to alittle higher purity but lower recovery about 5 In the extraction process it was foundthat pH and time had the highest and lowest effect on the extent of the extraction of thesaponin respectively In conclusion with application of CGA in concentrations of about1500 mg L of foaming agent purity and recovery of the foaming agent may reach to above74 6 and 58 9 respectively Keywords Aphron system Foaming Agent Extraction saponin surfactant Drainage stability separation defatted Soybean Flour
