Dry drainage modeling under barley plant cultivation to investigate soil water and solute transport Shahab Ansari Sh ansari@ag iut ac ir Sep 16 2019 Department of Water Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran 1st Supervisor Jahangir Abedi Koupai koupai@cc iut ac ir 2nd Supervisor BehrouzMostafazadeh Fard behrouz@cc iut ac ir Professor of Water Engineering Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture IsfahanUniversity of Technology Professor of Water Engineering Department of Water Engineering College of Agriculture IsfahanUniversity of TechnologyAbstractToday due to the financial difficulties and decrease of the quantity and quality of water resources researchers are investigating various aspects of the dry drainage system as a method with less needof water and implementation and maintenance costs for using in arid and semi arid regions Awareness of amount of transferred water and solute in this system is necessary to understand itssuitability with regional conditions and manage the fallow area in order to sustain the system Furthermore it is important for assessing pre implementation of salt treatment and recoveryprojects collected from soil surface of the fallow area and enhancing economic productivity ofthese systems The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dry drainage on soil water anddifferent solutes transport This research was carried out in three stages including experimentalstudy using a physical model calibration and validation of soil hydraulic and solute transportparameters using the HYDRUS 2D model and simulation of different dry drainage scenarios Theexperimental stage was carried out with 1 m width of the irrigated and fallow area under barleycultivation to investigate dry drainage conditions for 84 days in an out door site The studied soiltexture was loam and the stabilized depth of the groundwater table was 60 cm from the soil surface During the experiment soil samples were collected from different points of the physical model at21 42 63 and 84 days after planting In addition to soil water content salinity and different solutesconcentrations of the collected samples were measured and their variations were investigated Theresults showed that dry drainage led to transfer a significant part of the salts entering in theirrigated area to the fallow area in addition to controlling soil water content of the irrigated area Atthe end of the experiment the soil surface salinity of the irrigation and fallow areas were 145 and270 percents more than their initial values Changes in sodium and calcium concentration profileswere similar and they were different from changes in potassium and magnesium concentrationprofiles At the end of experiment sodium potassium calcium magnesium nitrate and chloride
