Sustainable Transportation Indicators Analysis by Modeling World Cities Modal Share Case Study Isfahan Mojtaba Majlessi M Majlessi@te iut ac it Departmant of Trasportation Engineering Isfahan University of Tenchnology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree Master of Science Language Persian Supervisor Dr Hossein Haghshenas ho hagh@cc iut ac ir Abstract A sustainable transportation system is one in which fuel consumption vehicle emissions safety congestionand social and economic access are of such levels that they can be sustained into the indefinite future withoutcausing great or irreparable harm to future generations of people throughout the world So sustainabletransportation investigates transportation from three aspects of the economic social and environmentalcharacteristics The approach of this research is to investigate the urban characteristics affecting the urbanmodal share as an important and effective parameter in sustainable transportation using world cities data UnionInternational des Transpors Publics UITP the international assosciation of public transport and passionatechampion of sustainable urban mobility internationallyDatabase is the most important source of data in thisresearch In this research parameters affecting mode share have been identified by means of correlationanalysis between urban characteristics and Mode share The outcome of this research is to create a logit modelfor a city which can predict the share of transportation modes of the city based on the input variables of eachequation In the following sustainable transportation indicators consistent with available databases arecalculated based on mode share and a ranking of sustainable cities was created and their characteristics havebeen analyzed The mode share of Isfahan is estimated using the created logit model and the sustainabletransport indicators of Isfahan was calculated The Mode share has different impacts on sustainabletransportation indicators Different policies have been designed to examine the impact of selected parameterson indicators which can be effective in improving the overall indicator of sustainable transportation Thesimultaneous implementation of sustainable transportation policies makes each of the policies play its role inimproving some of the sustainable transport indicators and the overall indicator of sustainable transportgenerates significant growth Keywords Mode share Sustainable Transportation Indicator Logit Model World Cities
