۱۹ Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Sorbent Produced from Clay and Oily Sludge and its Application for Removal of Phenol Phosphate and Nickel from Aqueous Solutions Niloofar Mojoudi Email n mojoodi@na iut ac ir September 22 2019 Department of Natural Resources Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree PhD Language PersianDr Norolah Mirghaffari mnorolah@cc iut ac irDr Mohsen Soleimani m soleimani@cc iut ac irAbstractNowadays selecting a suitable environmentally and economically adsorbent has becoming one of themost serious concerns of researchers In this study the oil sludge from crude oil storage tanks was usedto produce an activated carbon with a high specific surface area Also in order to enhance the surfaceand structural properties of clay absorbent a composite was produced using oil sludge andmontmorillonite clay A series of activated carbons were prepared using physical activation with watervapor at different temperatures Also three series of activated carbons and three series of clay carboncomposite adsorbents were produced at different production conditions including different activationtemperature activating agents and impregnation ratios Three carbonaceous adsorbents and twocomposite adsorbents were selected for continuing the experiments after comparing the productionefficiency iodine number textural properties specific surface area and adsorption capacities of phenoland nickel Other physical and structural properties of optimal adsorbents were analyzed by Fouriertransform infrared FTIR spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy SEM X ray diffraction XRD Leaching tests of heavy metals and determination of heavy metal concentrations were alsoperformed The effects of some parameters such as pH contact time adsorbent dose initialconcentrations of phenol nickel and phosphate and temperature were studied to determinethermodynamics parameters equilibrium isotherms and adsorption process kinetics The pseudo firstand pseudo second order kinetics equations were used to determine the best adsorption kinetic modelsof phenol nickel and phosphate onto the synthesized adsorbents at the optimum conditions Also theexperimental data was evaluated using Langmuir Freundlich and Tamkin isotherm models The resultsshowed that the specific surface area of carbonaceous adsorbent without activation and montmorilloniteclay were 14 and 172 m2 g respectively Among the four types of activated carbon prepared usingphysical and chemical methods the best surface and structural properties belong to the carbons thatwere activated by potassium hydroxide at 800 C with a ratio of 2 1 zinc chloride at 500 C with aratio of 1 1 and iron chloride at 700 C with a ratio of 2 1 having the specific surface area of 2263 1259 and 683 m2 g and total pore volume of 1 37 1 22 and 0 684 m3 g respectively Among thecomposite adsorbents two composites activated by potassium hydroxide and zinc chloride at 500 Cand a 2 1 impregnation ratio were selected as the best samples with highest specific surface area 297and 343 m2 g and porosity 0 257 and 0 835 m3 g respectively Therefore activation in optimalconditions could significantly increase the specific surface and pore structure The study of batchadsorption isotherms of phenol nickel and phosphate onto the optimal adsorbents showed that regardingthe correlation coefficient Freundlich Langmuir and Freundlich models describe the isotherm data
