Improving the Frequency Stability of Power Systesms with A High Penetration of Renewables Masoud Hajiakbari Fini m hajiakbari @ec iut ac ir Date of Submission 2020 01 26 Department of Elctrical and Computer EngineeringIsfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranMohammad Esmail Hamedani Golshan hgolshan @cc iut ac irAbbas Ketabi aketabi@kashanu ac irGholam Reza Yousefi Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of KashanAbstract To facilitate the increase in the penetration of renewables in the powers systems this thesis aims atalleviating the concerns raised for the frequency control schemes as a result of integration of renewables tothe grid including the increased rate of change of frequency ROCOF larger frequency deviations thatmight endanger the frequency stability lower frequency quality and the increased wear and tear of thegenerating units participating in frequency control Proper indices are introduced to quantify theseperformance criteria It has been shown that when the voltage of the buses does not experience largedeviations after the disturbances the frequency response model FRM can accurately calculate all theperformance indices except ROCOF However large voltage deviations reduce the accuracy of FRM incalculating all the performance indices A simplified network preserving SNP model has been proposed inthis thesis for calculating the performance indices especially ROCOF To rise to the aforementionedchallenges increasing the inertia of the grid through a combination of virtual inertia and synchronouscondensers and incorporating loads in frequency control have been suggested in this thesis Two controlschemes are proposed for the coordinated participation of loads together with generating units in frequencycontrol Determining the parameters of these control schemes has been defined as optimization problemswith proper objective functions and constraints It has been shown that using the control parametersobtained by solving these problems the proposed methods can achieve the determined objectives Keywords Demand response Frequency stability Multi objective optimization Power systemmodeling Renewable energy resources Virtual inertia Wear and tear of generating units IntroductionThe increased penetration of renewables has raised concerns about stability frequencyquality and wear and tear of the generating units The aim of this thesis is to rise to thechallenges resulted by the integration of renewables to the grid for the frequency controlschemes and the first step for resolving these problems is to have a proper model forcalculating the related performance indices accurately and with an acceptablecomputational cost Such a model would be very useful for tuning the parameters of thefrequency control schemes Frequency response model FRM has been widely used in
