Abstract In this study the electrohydrodynamic spray method with coaxial needle was used toencapsulate the healing agent inside the meso capsules A self healing coating was made byuniformly distributing meso capsules containing the healing agent in the epoxy coating Toproduce meso capsules poly styrene co acrylonitrile was used as shell and flaxseed oil wasused as core Scanning electron microscope was used to study the surface morphology of thecapsules and the particle size distribution and it was found that the surface of the capsules hada high roughness and their average size was 1 2 micrometers Fourier transform spectroscopyconfirmed that the shell was placed next to the healing agent and there was no chemical reactionbetween the shell and the core material Thermal gravimetry analysis also confirmed thepresence of both components and the thermal degradation temperature of the meso capsuleswas at the temperature between the degradation temperature of the shell and the core whichconfirms the successful encapsulation of the healing agent in the polymer shell Transmissionelectron microscopy was used to examine the encapsulation of meso capsules and the resultsshowed that their production was successful Scanning electron microscopy results from thesurface of fractured epoxy containing meso capsules showed the presence of intact and brokencapsules in the epoxy matrix Reflected light optical microscopy image of the scratch on thecoating applied to the steel surface before and after the repair showed that the healing agentrepaired the scratch well Mechanical tests include adhesion flexural strength and gloss areused to investigate the effect of adding meso capsules on the mechanical properties of thecoating High percentages of meso capsules were found to considerably reduce the adhesion ofthe coating The lowest loss of coating adhesion properties was related to the use of 1 wt ofmeso capsules This is also true for flexural strength and the least loss of flexural propertieshas been related to the use of one wt of meso capsules This is also satisfied the conditionfor flexural strength and the least loss of flexural properties has been related to the use of 1wt of meso capsules Similar behavior was also observed in the gloss test Qualitativecorrosion was evaluated using salt spray test and the highest amount of corrosion preventionof steel substrate and self healing of coating was determined in 5 wt sample By using EISand Tafel self healing was quantitatively investigated and the self healing efficiency forcoatings was calculated to be 97 for coating containing 5 wt of meso capsules Keywords Self healing Electrospray Linseed Oil Epoxy Coating
