simulation of falling film evaporation on smooth and grooved surfaces Sajad Khanali pour S khanali@me iut ac ir October 20 2020 Department of Mechanical Engineering Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 IranDegree Master of Science Language FarsiSupervisor M ashrafizaadeh Assoc Prof mahmud@iut ac ir AbstractFalling film evaporation on grooved surfaces is widely used in industry due to their higher heat transfer ratecompared to that of a smooth surface It is believed that these surfaces change the hydrodynamics of the flowand increase the contact surface in comparison to smooth surfaces So it increases the heat transfer However their mechanism is not yet fully understood In this study 2D falling film surface evaporations on two groovedsurfaces and a smooth surface were investigated on a specific film Reynolds number and constant temperatureand humidity of the air using the Ansys Fluent and the OpenFoam softwares In the present study the wallon which the film flows is insulated Due to the lack of a surface evaporation solver in the Ansys Fluent andthe OpenFoam softwares some developments were made to simulate surface evaporation in these softwares Although trying to simulate and write a suitable solver in the OpenFoam did not end well the UDF codedevelopment for the Ansys Fluent provided satisfactory results They can pave the way for modifying the codesin the OpenFoam and writing a suitable solver for the Simulation of surface evaporation in the OpenFoam Theresults showed that in contrast to the evaporation of a film in which the wall heats the liquid film in surfaceevaporation with an insulating wall the surface structure does not necessarily increase the evaporation ratebecause in some cases these structural surfaces reduce the flow velocity and ultimately reduce the surfaceevaporation rate Keywordssurface evaporation falling film grooved surfaces
