Abstract Carbon dioxide CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas which enters the atmosphere andsubsequently causes global warming and many other environmental problems One of thebest methods of CO2 removal from the atmosphere is CO2 absorption by solvent In thisthesis the use of wetted wire column which is a new method for gas absorption has beeninvestigated Gas absorption in this type of towers depends on many different parameters The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of various parameters and provideapproaches to improve the operation of wetted wire column in CO2 gas absorption Theparameters which have investigated are The amount of liquid and gas flow rates wirematerial wires surface structure and geometry of wet wires Studies show that changes in gasand liquid flow rates can have a significant effect on both the rate of absorption and masstransfer coefficient in the tower Also the use of surface modification methods can increasethe rate of adsorption Results show that in case of steel wire aluminum thermal spraying andcopper thermal spraying on the surface of wires increases the performance of the tower byabout 20 to 30 and 15 to 20 respectively For brass wires aluminum thermal sprayingincreases the absorption and mass transfer coefficient by up to 15 Also Experiments wereperformed with spiral wires and results showed that spiraling the wires could increase theabsorption rate by more than 30 Also a comparison between the wetted wire column andthe wetted wall column was made to determine that the absorption rate in the wetted wirecolumn is about 50 higher than the wetted wall tower In all studied setups and variations the effect of gas and liquid flow rates on the performance of tower was investigated 114
