Numerical Modeling to Investigate the Behavior of Caving Zone In Longwall Mining Method Mohammad Amin Kaviani Jazi Isfahan University of Technology Isfahan 84156 83111 Iran Degree M Sc Language FarsiSupervisor Alireza Baghbanan Bagh110@cc iut ac irAbstractIn the past years and decades specially in the 19th and 20th century longwall mining method has beenconsidered as one of the most popular and applicable underground mining methods around the world An unmined and constant area is always in a stable condition considering its stress and displacements but after extraction and nulling the area which had been filled with minerals the stability of earth getsdisrupted and in some areas in extracted areas we may have concentration or revelation of stress andconsequently some displacement will occur The purpose of this project is to investigate the stressredistribution around the mined out area and its condition in behind and front of the face of a longwallstope In addition this project follows the behavior of the earth in the goaf after caving and refilling ofthe area Then the most effective parameters on caving behavior and the way they influence on caving will be investigated For this purpose initially the most prominent parameters on caving behavior werechosen after doing a comprehensive paper review and then some significant coal mines which uselongwall method had been studied After choosing the parameters and their devoted values we usedTagucci design experiment method as our statistical method for forming needed experiments to reachthe desired results and analysing them and MINITAB software is used for this purpose Then themodels or in other words the suggested experiments had been simulated using FLAC3D and results forSZZ component and displacements were taken from the software It is worth mentioning that accordingto the difficulties existed in gaining geomechanical parameters belong to the caving zone andparameters needed for constructive models with strain hardening behavior we used mohr columbmodel for simulating the caving zone Assuming that the nearest place to the face is the weakest and thefarrest is the strongest so bulk and shear modulus have an ascending trend into the goaf For weakeningthe rock properties we used Disturbance Factor DF According to the results in all models the verticalstress starts rising in 20 meters backward the face and reachs to its peak 3 meters behind the face andexperiences a rise of 1 5 to 8 Mpa But then it drastically reduces in front of the face and reachs itsminimum value and then by having an ascending trend again it becomes equal to its initial amount Alsoresults reveal that when the DF is equal to 0 3 the initial value of stress will be recovered At last wepresented some equations in order to predicting the stress and strain amount in the goaf using statisticalanalysing the results of numerical models Key Words Longwall Mining Method Caving Zone Tagucci Design of Experiment Strees Redistribution Disturbance Factor
