The growing global demand for food products, in parallel with the growth of the global population, has led to the introduction and use of new methods of exploiting agricultural products. On the other hand, significant agricultural wastes such as leaves, stems and peel of agricultural products have increased significantly. Cellulose is a natural and widely used macromolecule that is used in various industries due to its unique properties such as abundance of primary resources and biodegradability and is used to produce various cellulose derivatives. Deep eutectic solvents are a type of green and environmentally friendly solvents that have been proposed as a suitable option for the extraction of biocompounds. Ohmic heating, also known as electrical resistance heating or electroconductive heating, is a new technology based on electric current in which an alternating current of electricity is passed through the desired material to perform the heating process. the aim of this research is to investigate and analyze the efficiency of deep eutectic solvents (DES) based on choline chloride for the extraction of cellulose from corn waste, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the ohmic process in improving cellulose extraction and to optimize the extraction using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM). In this study, a deep eutectic solvent composed of choline chloride and glycerol was used at three different ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3, and the solvent properties including pH, viscosity, electrical conductivity, and density were evaluated. Furthermore, the deep eutectic solvents with the aforementioned ratios were used for cellulose extraction via the conventional heating method to select the optimal ratio. Furthermore, the deep eutectic solvents with the aforementioned ratios were used for cellulose extraction via the conventional heating method to select the optimal ratio. According to the results obtained from this section, the cellulose content extracted using the deep eutectic solvent at a ratio of 1:3 was significantly higher than that of the other two ratios. Additionally, the residual impurities in it were also significantly lower than those of the other treatments with the mentioned molar ratios. Subsequently, the solvent with this optimized ratio was used to investigate the effect of ohmic heating variables, including temperature, time, and voltage, on the extraction yield, cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose content, as well as energy consumption, and to optimize these characteristics. The results of this section indicated that the optimal extraction conditions comprised a time of 2 hours, a temperature of 90 °C, and a voltage level of 194 volts. Subsequently, the structural characteristics of the celluloses obtained under the optimal conditions in ohmic heating, conventional heating, and the control treatment (using sodium hydroxide and sodium chlorite) were investigated and compared using infrared spectroscopy, crystallinity measurement via X-ray diffraction, weight change evaluation via thermogravimetric analysis, and microstructure examination via electron microscopy imaging. According to the obtained results, the cellulose derived from the control treatment exhibited greater purity and crystallinity but lower thermal stability and more pronounced structural degradation; however, the sample obtained using the deep eutectic solvent demonstrated greater thermal stability and a better microscopic structure. Moreover, ohmic heating, owing to its significant energy savings and the superior purity of the resulting cellulose, is considered a suitable option for application in the field of cellulose extraction.
